[glow=blue,2,300]General Description:[/glow] ✨
Bio-mimicking device of arboreal xylem water transport and
transpiration with enhanced capillary water action on a
hydrophillic substrate followed by a hydrophobic substrate to
reduce tube wall friction and a magnetic field to further
concentrate down flow which exits via a low pressure air tube
surrounding the water tube. Unlike the water in transpiration,
this water does not evaporate. The water falls a certain
distance to a pelton wheel or some other water driven device
which in turn is connected via mechanical means to an electric
generator.
Purpose:
Generate power by lifting a column of water to a sufficent
height in order to use said water when it decends via gravity
and pressure differentials.
Background:
Water is the lubricant of living systems. It is ubiquitous but
without it we cannot function. It is nontoxic unless you consume
several gallons in one sitting. It is easily stored and most
households have a ready and inexpensive supply of relatively
clean water. The successfull introduction of a power generating
device which does not use hydrocarbon based fuel would be a boon
to the environment and the economy.
Every time a hydrocarbon is burned, some oxygen is depleted. We
breath oxygen so I have a dim view of burning hydrocarbons. In
the GAPG no oxygen is depleted from our atmosphere and no carbon
dioxide and water is added to it either. Consequently I believe
that imitating the trees in a high tech fashion is the ultimate
in sustainability from just about every standpoint.
Gymnosperms and Angiosperm trees have [glow=blue,2,300]water
transporting cells[/glow] called [glow=blue,2,300]tracheid
elements[/glow]. The angiosperm's tracheid element cells are
called the [glow=blue,2,300]phloem[/glow]. The gymnosperm's
tracheid element cells are called the
[glow=blue,2,300]xylem[/glow]. The xylem is less efficient than
the phloem at water transport but much hardier. The xylem is
very resistant to temperature extremes.
Thus, 🌲 conifers (which are gymnosperms) function in
colder weather where an 🌳 angiosperm is for all
practical purposes, hybernating.
The Phloem also uses more complex molecular chemistry to move
water so I opted for the [glow=blue,2,300]xylem[/glow], which
relies exclusively on capillary action. The anatomy of the xylem
has, in my opinion, been taken for granted as a simple, air
tight, vertical capillary tube which combines with hundreds or
thousands of others to lift several gallons of water up to 100
feet a day as in the giant redwoods. I agree that the action is
capillary but [glow=green,2,300]helical, scalariform, annular
and other anatomical features[/glow] of certain xylem cells
[glow=blue,2,300][size=14pt]increase[/size] the surface
area[/glow] of the cell wall, thereby
[glow=blue,2,300]increasing the number of molecular "handholds"
[/glow]that the water column has to defeat gravity.
This capillarity is more akin to the movement of water under
ground. Underground water tables, as opposed to the surface of a
lake, are not flat. They can climb up hills and mountains or
descend seemingly without regard to gravity. The reason is that
the soil composition is more important than gravity . I am not
talking about an aquifer which is under pressure deep under
ground. I am talking about the extreme amount of surface area
that water is subjected to underground.
If the soil is hydrophobic, the water is repelled and if it is
hydrophilic, the water molecules are attracted. Thus, the key to
greater water column height is to
[glow=blue,2,300]increase[/glow] the
[glow=blue,2,300]hydrophilic wall surface area[/glow]. No, we
don't fill a tube with hydrophylic soil but it did cross my mind
;D. A gradual [glow=blue,2,300]ascending flat spiral[/glow] is
the basic design.
Once you get the water column to a sufficient height, it is not
difficult to coax it to fall by means of a hydrophobic substrate
and a magnetic field to further repel the water from the tube
wall and lower pressure.
The ascending and descending water column must be kept air
tight. As in nature with an actual xylem, any breach which
allows air or some other gas in destroys the process. The
descending water column makes use of the stretchability of water
which has been measured up to 15 atmospheres.
I propose to have a slighly greater amount of water descending
than ascending to additionally aid the descent. The ascending
column will have to move faster in order to supply the
descending column with adequate volume. The stretchability of
water, provided no air gets in, will ensure that this speed
differential doesn't cause the ascending and descending column
to split.
Definitions:
Hydrophilicity – This term describes the property of a surface
that makes it have an affinity for water. When water hits
hydrophilic glass, it flattens and spreads out to form a thin
sheet on the glass surface. This sheeting action not only helps
rinse away loosened dirt and other organic material it also
minimizes spots and streaks by helping the glass dry more
quickly and evenly.
A glass surface is considered to be hydrophilic if the contact
angle of a water bead on its surface is less than 20 degrees. In
contrast, a hydrophobic surface (which promotes beading like
that of a freshly waxed automobile) has a contact angle of more
than 60 degrees. The contact angle on ordinary glass measures
20-40 degrees.
