       College Of the Future

This one is a bit of a stretch, and would require a ridiculous
special effects budget, but it hit me one day and I
       really like the idea.
It's a short film, and I haven't fleshed it out too much yet,
but I got the idea when I was walking to lunch one day.
The film could start out with someone walking around campus, and
at a certain point they pass walk through a laser beam
set just above the sidewalk. At this point a hologram pops up
next to them, and a cheery voice says, "Hello! This message was
       created
by the Wesleyan Council for Extraterrestrial Affairs to educate
people about the plight of the inhabitants of Titan." As the
       hologram starts talking
about how the Glistons-or "Titanians" as the imperialist,
exploitative corporations have labeled them-are forced to work
half the day, which in this case is 30 hours, in the unsafe salt
mines, the student just sighs really loudly and keeps walking,
muttering "Damn it," as the hologram follows them and continues
to recite the message it was programmed to deliver.
I haven't really thought about it past that, but I basically
want the film to look super futuristic, with people basically
walking around with PCs in their pockets, alien students, etc.
Basically, a sort of Transmetropolitan-ish feel, of an
absolutely crazy future. But beneath all the crazy sci-fi
elements, college life for the student main character (and all
the other students, for that matter) is basically the same. They
bitch about not being able to get into the class on Warp Drive
Physics they need for their Astral Navigation major, there's an
affinity group for aliens, as well as one for cyborgs and
transhumans, both with catchy acronyms (that will also somehow
incorporate "Wes" if this takes place at Wesleyan, such as
WesWire, the robot affinity group for students of wire). The
main character's best friend got super trashed last Saturday and
made out with...someone, they're not too sure how, and they
wound up with a deformed midget sticking out of their chest who
keeps going on about "starting the reactor." The idea is that
despite how radically things change, they'll stay the same. And
not that many people will really notice.
I realize this is impossible for us right now, but I just really
liked the idea. I'm also doing videos with the ampersand, the
humor bit of the Wesleyan paper, and I want to do a series of
PSAs with them. One idea I had for those is "How to deal with
Steve," where Steve is just this normal guy, but the voiceover
says stuff like "It is inevitable that at some point in your
Wesleyan career, you will have the unfortunate obligation to
deal with Steve, the most repulsive being to ever set foot on
       campus."

this sounds less like a short film and more like a tv show or a
movie. I actually really like the idea and not to make a
reaching generalization but it reminds me of futurama not just
because of its setting, but because the problems of the people
on futurama are generally similar to the ones we have today just
to an exaggerated extent. Too bad we could never do this without
making it look corny/cheesy with the special effects etc.
