-- High Captain Song --
-=Thassa=-
Is sailing the green waters of the Thassa
says to ALL: The Thassa is difficult to travel upon, even with
sunny skies and light winds, so treacherous are the sudden
changes in its currents. But for one used to navigating the
treacherous waters of the North, it is easier, if not quite
easy. I've barely been a Captain for a year, but I've progressed
rapidly. It helped that, like most Northmen, I trained in many
crafts before I decided to be a Skald, and I first began my
travels by working as a sailor for free passage to the places I
dreamed of seeing as a young lad listening to other singers and
poets telling taless of where they had been. Now I had tales of
my own to tell and a ship of my own to carry me. But there is
some difference in captaining a ship and crewing it.
Still, I knew most of the jobs that needed doing and I had
earned by crew's respect by not being too proud to do what
needed doing. When strong hands were needed to pull a rope, I
burned my hands gripping it as they did. Someday I might manage
to get to where my First Mate Pike would let me take the wheel
further north than Lydius without standing ready to take over
lest some sudden iceberg emerge in front of the ship or a Kraken
emerge. Of course I don't believe those tales of giant beasts
with many arms grabbing ships. Gor is full of many wonders, most
of them horrible, but surely if such a beast existed, it would
leave no survivors to tell tales of them existing or would leave
corpses washed up on the beaches? Ah, but when did logic ever
get in the way of a good legend?
"Think you she'll hold until we reach our port?" I ask Pike
conversationally. The old salt bites his lip as he considers
this before answering. "If the weather were to hold, I'd say so,
Captain, but my ankle's starting to twitch. There's a storm
coming and we'd do well to put ashore a bit and do some quick
repairs before we're stuck bailing the hold." I sigh. Even the
best of ships will leak in time, and you can only do so much
with pitch at sea.
"That means putting in at Port Kar. And you know how Mal will
feel about that." Pike merely nods, his expression as stoic as
ever before I add, "I'll be the one to break it to her." Relief
passes over the old salt's grizzled face. He may love my
co-captain like a daughter and give her merry hell about things
in a way few others would dare. Yet even he knows better than to
raise that subject around her.
