There were three final things we had to do before the Crimson
Corsair was ready to launch. The first was a carefully planned
ritual among every shipbuilder on Gor.. Sailors treated their
ships as living things, so eyes were painted on the prow of each
ship so that the ship might see trouble coming. That step was
easy enough. The next was a local tradition to some Northern
villages- one that involved breaking a bottle of booze upon the
prow and naming the ship. Opinions differed as to whether or not
this was needed for a ship that was renamed or reclaimed, but
High Captain Song did not believe in taking the chance.

The third and final thing was not a maritime tradition, but the
HIgh Captain had been insistent upon it. One the eyes were
painted, and the ship blessed with a bottle of firewine brandy,
he stripped his Mate, placed a collar about her neck, and took
her to his cabin to break in the newly reinforced ring by his
bed. None were witness to this, however, as the High Captain had
the foresight to send all the crew away for the night. When the
dawn broke, both were full dressed and waiting to meet the crew
as they returned from shoreleave. As the tide rolled out, so did
the Crimson Corsair, though both High Captains went to bed
almost immediately after the ship set sail.

Two days later, they had settled into a routine similar to that
enjoyed on the Persephone's Fate. The Skald turned Captain took
command of the ship by day, being an early riser by nature. His
Mate, inclined to resting during the day to avoid the harsh
Southern sun, took command at night. In many ways they were as
fire and ice. She was born to the sea and command. He was an
urban creature who walked his own path. There was little logical
about their pairing, but since when has love ever been logical?
They brought out the best in each other, changing for good or
ill under the other's influence. He made the fearsome Valkyrie
of the Seas smile. She turned the Skald into a Captain, albeit
one who ruled through love rather than fear. So far that had
held them together. Yet the question danced upon his mind even
as he steered the ship - could there be a new home waiting for
them somewhere? Something that offered the advantages of the
island, but would allow them a bit more latitude as far as trade
       went? They would see.
