Third Time; maybe some charms too, Fishmoth's back again
By: Fishmoth Date: February 3, 2019, 10:26 am
---------------------------------------------------------
- How did you learn about the Sixty Thieves?
I've been a part of your lot twice. First on a undead priest
named Fishmoth, then on an undead rogue named Gazelle-Eyes. Your
guild's always held a special place in my heart because of a
close friend being an officer, and because of the respectful,
well-mannered leadership and general memberbase. The last time I
was here, I left because I felt my roleplay was so completely
different than the often wacky and lighthearted, movies style of
crime you wanted to portray. I loved it, and I didn't want to
ruin it by trying to be a part of it.
I'm told you've changed, and since I haven't, I'd like to give
this another shot. For the first time, without holding back or
trying to fit in, but honestly applying on a character I feel is
what I enjoy portraying in roleplay, to the fullest. That means
a layered, thoughtful, intelligent, carefully planning, low
power, aversed to unnecessary violence person with several
layers, conflicting motivations and dozens of small, carefully
honed details. [s]A character that'd be too grimdark for Sons of
Anarchy and too layered for Game of Thrones.[/s]
- What is your character's name and race?
Nerithiala Searsong, Blood Elf.
- Why do you and your character seek to join the Sixty Thieves?
I've had several conversations with two of your officers about
your current style, and conflict roleplay. With a history of
five years in law enforcement and criminal roleplay, with mostly
just conflict roleplay rather than DM'd events, it's where my
natural interest is. By conflict roleplay, I mean a kind of
roleplay that happens against other player characters or guilds
and often engages the community at large, leads to spontaneous
storylines and works in an organic manner.
For my character; she's a person used to landing on her feet,
suddenly finding herself out of options.
- Tell us about your character's background and how they
became/are becoming a criminal
Nerithiala's the second of three sisters of House Searsong, an
old and prestigious elven house steeped in tradition. They're
heavily invested in arms trade, and her big sister's a blood
knight aiming to become a general while Nerithiala's received
education in spellcasting. She was looking at a career as a
blood mage and eventual magistrate or magister, and fought with
her sisters in the Broken Isles (but not Argus) as a soldier
trying to prove herself to her superiors.
Unfortunately, after the fall of Argus, came the split of the
void elves. Nerithiala's closest friend joined them, worst of
all, arguing that weapons of war were needed to rebuild the
depleted Horde. Neri believed in her friend to the very end,
even hiding her from the authorities. Eventually, Neri was
discovered, disowned and stripped of her ranks and titles. After
months of court trials, it looked certain that she would also be
stripped of her citizenship and banished from Quel'thalas. As
all of her friends deserted her, and her family turned their
backs on her, Neri decided to flee.
The burning shame pushes her away from the society, and she
doesn't want anyone to find out who she is, even though the
golden eyes of her deeply Light-devoted family still set her
somewhat apart. She wants to bury her past and seek to exist as
someone else, while searching for answers to why what she did
was a crime, and was her friend still so evil, to even explore
the Void. Neri doesn't want to go to her old contacts, and
doesn't trust them either, and she's scared of the mercenaries
that recruit criminals, and what they might do to her. She has
no money, and even though she can conjure food, you do need coin
too, and she's coming close to having sold all of the
possessions she fled with.
- What kind of skills does your character have?
She is a trained mage who has seen war. A practiced spellcaster
with ability to weave spells under pressure. She also has
medical knowledge and faith in the Light, but she can't heal
with the Light. She understands workings of the Horde military
and small unit tactics.
I do imagine that mage training covers the use of portals, and
forming portals, but as it requires a licence to utilize, hers
has been revoked. I imagine that this means she cannot safely
make portals anymore, but it's a discussion we need to have. I
have a love-hate relationship with portals in that they
sometimes allow you to travel the land that should be bigger
than what the game world represents, but that they also skip the
travel part and make silly situations where you fight in one end
of the world and come back to sit in a tavern for the evening.
In general, I'd prefer she is unable to use portals, even if her
background makes sense for her to know how to use them.
- How powerful is your character?
As a soldier (and a noble whose upbringing sets her a small
nudge above her peers), she can stand up to another soldier, and
depending on circumstances, experience and skill of her
opponent, probably emerge victorious. She can probably cause
some illusions or weave the arcane to slip past some wards or go
in dimly lit areas undetected, or appear a bit different than
she really looks like. There is no way in fel she could handle
several experienced opponents, or save the world from the
Burning Legion. A demon hunter would probably cut her down
before she can blink an eye.
- How would you define conflict in RP, and how do you feel about
consequences?
I feel that not enough people understand consequences, in
general, but to quote a person I knew, 'consequences always fall
on someone'. A lot of conflict in roleplay is done with emotes
that aim to kill or seriously mutilate the opponent, who is then
expected to dodge or just say 'Ow!' when punched in the face.
For that reason, I often bend my characters' skills a little
upwards than regular when fighting emote duels with players. Not
because I don't think my character shouldn't be hit, but because
I want to keep a sensible narrative. If the circumstances call
for it, though, I don't shy away from permanently maiming,
wounding or killing off my character. I also don't mean to sound
like I don't treat other players with respect, but I've enough
history in conflict roleplay to have come to realize that it's
more enjoyable to both parties if my character has more chance
to defend themselves. Obviously, I don't do it to force
consequences on anyone, and wouldn't come off to 'kill a
character' with that as the only outcome in mind.
My way of roleplaying trauma, both physical and psychological,
is something of a meme by now. 'I didn't think your character
would die!' or 'It was just a punch to the face, I didn't want
to permanently ruin her face!' is something I've heard quite
often. I have no limits, whatsoever, to what can happen to my
characters, and I'll portray the consequences of it all as
'close to skin' as possible. Hence, if there's topics you don't
want to see, such as an amputee or a **** victim, warn me
beforehand. If you don't want things to snowball, such as a
wound plausibly infecting and taking the character out of income
and guild roleplay for days on end, also let me know. I don't
purposefully victimize my characters, I just don't hold back or
try to go through OOC loops and hoops to protect them, so there
is a 'real' chance of something bad happening to them - and the
risk of that is what makes conflict roleplay fun for me, as it
makes the rewards feel more rewarding too.
- What would your character's nickname be?
Welkin.
- Anything else you'd like to share about your character or
yourself?
As before, due to a demanding job and living in Finland, I have
to log at around 21 server time on weekdays. I also occasionally
raid on Alliance side on Fridays and Saturdays, but not every
weekend. If there's events you run, I'll negotiate to adjust,
but I prefer roleplaying in the early hours. Conflict roleplay
also requires activity and being around, so I'm well aware I'll
be missing the usual drama that happens after pub crawl at 3 am.
I don't mind that, as long as there's enough roleplay in the
late afternoon and early evening to pick up the pieces and maybe
go rob someone in retaliation.

Hi there! Thank you for your application, and it's great to see
you around again! I'm very excited to see what you can do with
us, but I do have one question that I'd like you to answer
before I proceed with my own thoughts and comments.
1). You say your character is a trained mage, which may be
beyond our limit for power level. How much can she reasonably
do? What are her limits? As, if she is trained, she would be
better off finding work elsewhere that works to her skills,
rather than being a low-life thief. I trust you to be able to
role play this well, as I know how you RP well, but I'd like to
know the maximum amount she would be able to do before getting
tired/giving up, for our own notes.
And... out of my own curiosity, and nothing to do with the
app... why 'Welkin'? You don't have to answer that if you'd
prefer to answer IC, of course, I'm mostly just intrigued, as
that's quite an uncommon sounding nickname.

Hello! The power level question is a good one, albeit as I
already know the answer I would rather present two questions of
my own:
What does "Don't roleplay in the now, roleplay in the how."
mean?
Also could you describe an example where you apply of character
logic to an in character situation?

I feel like I posted some examples of that, but I can clarify. I
don't think the character can run into a squad of guards and
expect to survive. I also don't think she can do well against
special forces, death knights, demon hunters and so forth; but
she isn't a civilian either and can possibly blink or otherwise
make a rapid escape from an angry axe-toting grunt, rather than
scream and die.
She is physically in a better than average shape, has no
pre-existing disfigurations or diseases. How much she can do in
a fight depends on the spells she casts. She has no real mastery
in illusion, but she can do camouflage and mild obfuscation, she
can swing a fireball but starting to cast lights her up like a
Winter's Day Tree.
It's difficult to give any precise maximum numbers. It's not her
way to resolve conflict by running in and starting to blow
things up, in spite of her past. And in situations where
pressed, she might find herself pushing past a limit - or if she
is nervous or panics, fail to perform to her potential, and
might even be completely useless.
As for finding other kinds of work, perhaps she could. Like I
said, she's used to landing on her feet. It's difficult to give
words to the emotions and whys, and I don't think she herself
can provide a strict answer either. 'Why aren't you a maid?'
'Why didn't you just pick up tailoring?' 'Why not be a
mercenary?'. There's a lot of fear, guilt and pressure. What's
the name of the feeling when the big sister you admired and
loved starts acting haughtily, and with disappointment, and
ultimately treats you like a traitor and a criminal? When do you
believe everyone when they say that you are that, indeed, and
when do you know what's really in your heart?
Maybe she could find other kind of work and do alright. Maybe a
number of the people in Sixty Thieves could. Doesn't mean they
will. I understand you want to make sure I'm not ending up being
more powerful than a lot of the other members, and above all
that the concept fits your narrative. I'm open to discussing all
the points concerning that, but I'm sorry that I can't really
give you any easy decimals or a DPS meter.

I want to save the answer to in character, should Welkin be

my own:
What does "Don't roleplay in the now, roleplay in the how."
mean?
"Don't roleplay in the now, roleplay in the how" is a quote I've
set on my enjin profile. Its inspiration originally came from a
situation where a bartender was a powerful mage and had trouble
controlling their gifts, and ended up setting fire to the hair
of a person. It was meant to be comic relief, but I was present
as a member of law enforcement. And what does a cop do when
seeing someone being set on fire? Not to mention the person
being set on fire suffered heavy burns.
It's a variation of the 'think before you act', which probably
means 'think about consequences before you act', and it can't do
harm to also consider whether the person you're interacting with
roleplays in the same fiction and narration as you do. The 'how'
refers to the how exactly character pulls something off, how it
fits to the world, and what will happen after, and how the
character will deal with that. The 'now' refers to not getting
carried away in the flow of roleplay to forget to think a little
bit ahead.
[quote author=Shadow link=topic=554.msg3772#msg3772

Also could you describe an example where you apply of character
logic to an in character situation?
"I, as a player, know that my character is about to make a
mistake. They haven't thought of something I have, because they
don't think the same way I do. Because I do not so-called
roleplay to win, or take it personally when my character fails
to think something or doesn't look as cool as I'd want them to
be, I will not go along with meta game and do what I OOC'ly know
is the most sensible path. Instead, my character will act
according to what they perceive and consider best, no matter
where it leads, because they're confined by the limits of their
own personality."
To give a more concrete example, in a D&D game our characters
legged it from a zombie. It was a scary, walking corpse, and
they'd never seen one in their lives. They didn't know what kind
of unholy monstrosity it was, or what it was capable of.
Ruleswise, all players knew that we were a party of four with a
cleric who can turn undead, and it was a 1/4 level NPC we'd kill
in a round.

Those are some highly informative answers, thank you!
There's only so much that we can talk of our RP attitudes and
character power to degree whether you're a match. Thus, I feel
like we should start RPing together, rather than question the
circumference of your fireballs further. Just as before I fully
vouch for this application, as no matter what happens I can only
see the benefits in accepting it.
Our GM ought to be replying soon enough to give his opinion.

Hello again, and thank you for taking the time to write the
application, as well as answering to all of the questions!
Echoing Shadow, there is little else to ask at this point. The
application and your responses are highly informative, and you
appear to have a very mature understanding of conflict roleplay.
Approved!
Get in touch with Thalindor (myself), Laerynna, Chíel, or Kaziik
