Dottzie Doomgloom! (Application)
By: Stutter Date: February 26, 2017, 11:18 am
---------------------------------------------------------
“What in the Queen’s name were you thinking?!”
The echo returned the shouted words as soon as they hit the
stone walls, making it sound like it was ten Project Managers
that were yelling at her, instead of just the one actually
present. This, along the loud cracks from both the worn out wood
and the bony fist slammed against the desk, made Dottzie
Doomgloom flinch and flop her usually oh so perky ears.
Dottzie hastily tried to explain herself: “Madame, I simply
assumed it’d be beneficial for the whole project to have
additional data--”
“Assumed? Assumed?! We do not assume here, researchers do not
assume! Do you have any idea how much of the annual budget we
now have to turn into damn compensation money for Thunder Bluff?
Would you care to assume how much that is, Miss Doomgloom?” the
Project Manager roared, and Dottzie could've sworn she saw her
usually so pale complexion grow a shade or two darker out of
sheer fury.
Just as Dottzie was about to offer them to cut her pay to
protect the funding of the Special Effects Program, the Project
Manager leaned back with a sudden, terrifying calmness.
”You do understand that we're going to have to let you go, Miss
Doomgloom. Having a volunteer die places the whole program under
a terrible risk of termination and that's not a risk the
Apothecarium is willing to take. Especially not in Orgrimmar,
since setting up the branch that far away was so difficult in
the first place.”
And Dottzie understood. She hated it, but she understood.
Dottzie had been hired for the Undercity Apothecarium Special
Effects Program pretty much a year ago when they had opened a
branch to Orgrimmar and needed preferably living scientists as
well as test subjects. All of the latter were volunteers of
course, since none of it was supposed to be lethal. Just a nice
way for some poorer folk to earn some extra cash as long as they
followed their given dosage and reported the symptoms
accurately.
She had worked hard and done well – after all, she was skilled
in alchemy and it's effects, and crafting the potions and
keeping an eye on the test subjects was simple enough for her to
do some research of her own on the side. She kept telling
herself that it all had been about monitoring – about knowing
the andidotes and being able to give them just in time. When she
moved on to hexes and curses, she kept on to the same
principles. It's not like most of them even noticed; they were
already in pain to begin with. They weren't meant to die.
She kept on approaching the spells as if they were scientific
research as well, keeping thorough records about everything. To
her luck those records were never found – had they, she would've
been wayyy more than just fired.
But the goblinette was unable to see the luck in her situation
as she days later pushed the door open to her small, rental room
at the other side of the city. She had been turned down not only
from one, but three other places of work and on the floor of her
small room awaited a pile of what she only assumed to be more
rejection letters from around Azeroth – in addition of some
bills of imported alchemy supplies and herbs she had ordered
back when her financial status was still assumeably stable.
Never before had she felt such a combination of anger and defeat
– for a moment she dreamed of cursing and poisoning up the whole
Special Effects Program before she realized she couldn't afford
the supplies needed for the spells and the potions anyways.
She idle mindedly stepped closer to her book shelf, moved aside
the Guide to Advanced Alchemy Volume II and reached for the
carefully hidden Soulshard. She could feel it's pulsating call
through the cloth it was wrapped in, crudely reminding her of
what she had done; of the life she had taken, even if by
accident. With mixed feelings Dottzie squeezed the stone in her
hand and for a moment she thought it as a key which had the
power to open the door to her own, personal downfall. Shivering
at the thought she quickly stashed the shard back to the
bookshelf, along with the frightening thoughts it brough to her.
No, she decided. No, she would not give in to what she knew she
could not return from. There were other, perhaps illegal but way
more ethical ways of continuing her research and her personal
journey as a scientist. All she needed was a little bit of help,
money and motivation – and she knew just who to ask.
Who knows – perhaps there'd be something she could be able to
give in return.
* * *
Why does she want to join the lowlife theft gang, the Sixty
Thieves? (And OOCly, why do you want to join?)
After messing up at work, she's now permanently unemployed. In
the dire need of money due to her expensive work and already
existing debt, she's decided to look for work and contacts from
outside the Alchemy and research community.
Conveniently, she has a relative in the gang (Frickle) and she
plans to ask her for help on finding some new work. This could
serve as the IC link on her finding out about the Thieves.
OOC:ly I'd like to join since I've been a member before and
know many people from the gang both OOC, and IC on other
characters. I enjoy the RP and the small, tight family-like
community you have :)
What would her nickname be?
I'm currently thinking of ”Flask”, since it has a fun double
meaning and it's related to alchemy.
However, as always, I'm open to suggestions!
How powerful is your character?
She is a professional 'Special Effects Specialist' which would
include potions and Affliction Warlock like spells which both
can be very powerful. However, to tone it down I'm approaching
both the profession and the spec from a preparation point of
view – if she is to do a potent spell or a potion it'll take
time, effort and ingredients to do. I'm looking forward to
roleplaying all of it, and when it comes to obtaining rarer
ingredients she might need help which could bring some fun RP to
other members in the gang.
She's not too good in combat, but training IC:ly in weaponry
and stealth sounds like a fun thing to do while not busy in
actual events.
What's her background like?
Originating from Kezan as many goblins, she decided to head to
Undercity after joining The Horde. Somewhat loyal to the
Bilgewater Cartel she was more interested in the Apothecarium
and their work.
However, the cold halls of the Undercity and working on the
Forsaken styled alchemy didn't really fill her need of research
and thus she transferred to Orgrimmar to work with (and on) the
living as soon as the opportunity arose.
She worked on both official and unofficial projects, and one of
the latter botched so bad that she was caught and thus fired.
How consistent is your character with following the lore?
As much as possible, part from taking some liberties (for
example coming up with an Orgrimmar branch of the Apothecarium)
as long as they fit the world and serve a point in the story I'm
trying to tell.
When roleplaying a Warlock I also try to stick to the lore as
much as possible – but for everyone's benefit I'll stay away
from extremely potent and corrupting Shadow and especially Fel
magic , and focus more on slow affliction curses. I also tend to
stay away from demon RP – I think summoning them requires a lot
of skill in addition to at least one soulshard.
My weak point in the lore is the timeline, since the existence
of the games doesn't match the actual time that's passed in the
games.
"Are you a killer, lass?"
Dottzie has killed once, by accident, and she feels extremely
bad about it. To me as a player killing one's way out of a
situation is a little bit boring, thus I don't really want to
roleplay a character like that. It's more fun to come up with
alternative ways of achieving something or escaping a situation.
Do you accept RP-consequences?
I do – Only forming a close relationship (as in a love-interest
kind of a thing) is something I'd like to be asked about first.
Everything else is okay as long as it matches IC ordeals.
Any specialities she has? Perhaps a skill in something, a
behavioural or personality trait that can be considered unique.
I assume that the scientist-meets-witch-doctor approach to
spells and alchemy isn't that unique, but I hope it brings some
balance to the shivs and daggers kind of a style of RP as I've
understood most of the rogue and thief roleplayers have.
In addition I'm exited about the opportunity to RP some hexing,
cursing and potion making with characters who might have similar
interests and skills as Dottzie has.
Nerd RP! :D
What's your activity like?
I'm mostly active during weekdays and evenings, often busy on
weekends.
Feedback on the character is, as always, appreciated :)

So happy to see this application! Thanks for taking the time to
write it :D
Love how you've managed to create a character with a class that
(in my opinion) is difficult to make into a non-bloody sort of
criminal. She has an interesting backstory which isn't too
complex and very fitting for a warlock.
I have no questions, or criticism, and as I like the nickname
Flask I probably won't suggest anything else unless I get
enlightened ICly :D
And, definitely abuse the fact she is related to Frickle. Very
good opportunity to get her to the Thieves with minimal
information (or more, if Frickle has a gossipy mouth)
Approved!

Loved the story at the beginning as well as the combo of curses
and potions! A very nice detailled app, motivation seems solid
to me too ;D The only thing I'm wondering about is the
hexing/witchdoctoring, from what I know it is typical for trolls
and is essentially spiritual magic? I'm not entirely sure.
Either way, always lovely to see someone's magic rp in play,
especially with the preperations, ritual and potion stuff as you
described!

Thanks so much for the feedback!
I purposefully avoided the terms 'witch' and 'witchdoctor' in
my app, since I agree it to be more trollish and related to the
spirits and The Loa.
However, I figured 'hexing' to be a suitable term for curses one
could prepare with time and proper ingredients, even if no
actual praying or calling for any spirits would be necessary.
Obviously, since my character is a warlock after all, she would
probably use these ritual-like preparations to call and infuse
Shadow magic instead of being able to just simply cast it (like
a mage could cast a fire bolt or a more experienced / different
warlock could cast a shadow bolt). For the sake of RP though, I
had the idea of Dottzie channeling these prepared shadow spells
into objects or potions just so she can sometimes use them later
(for example she could have three previously crafted cursed
items [or regular potions] on her, which would allow her to
attack three different enemies during an event. After she's used
her attacks, successfully or failed, she would have no more
spells in her use for that time).
I apologize for the confusion in the terminology, I hope my
explanation and example helps :)
If you feel the previously described warlocky side is too
witchy/witchdoctory, I'd be happy to tone it down and focus more
on the alchemy side of the character.
I know there are already some Witchy (heh) characters in the
guild, so those kind of skills can be inspected and possibly
learned IC as well should the need or opportunity ever arise :)
I'm still open to feedback, critique and suggestions!

Hello again!
I too enjoyed reading the story. Although she isn't (yet) a
thief, the background opens up a good opportunity to start on a
criminal career. The character seems different (with perhaps
only some similarities with Witch) to any that we currently
have, too, which would make her a good addition to the mix.
What comes to power-level related things, it can be discussed
later-on if anyone feels a need for such arises from RP.
Personally, knowing you and your RP, I doubt we'll be running
into issues regarding that.
Approved!

I do like this idea and I've been trying to do that as well but
it is something I easily forget at times (usage of wands)
But it is a good thing that you are thinking of giving magic a
kind of handicap, especially when it comes to curses as many
people in other communities finds curses to be OP (And it is
very OP unless you make conditions for it.)
On the other hand; I'm very happy to see you again and also
coming back with someone that use curses, perhaps our characters
will get along?
I dont have much to poke on you since I've seen you in action
with other characters and except the mentioning that your
character is yet to be a criminal, it is not much to say.

This is less about the application and more about the effect of
your character and other guildies.
I definitely think it could be considered to have some sort of
'schooling' go on between e.g. Witch and Flask, as it's a great
opportunity for that sort of RP inside a guild that doesn't
focus on dark magic. (but of course having your character
already able with curses would make sense as she has done
studying prior to asking her cousin for help for work)
