Audit Committee on Aspire Camp Accounting

---------------------------------------------------------
Listened in on the Audit Committee meeting as a prelude to my
Foundation meeting this afternoon.
Difficult to follow the early part of meeting o the July
financials as I did not have their documents. Apparently some
had questions but without the documents, I don't want to comment
here. I am pleased to hear that some had questions after sitting
in several BOD meetings where I was the only one who asked
questions.
Aspire Camp Funding of the Junior and Cadet Trips - again,
didn't have their documents but I heard enough to know that
basically the BOD members were clueless as to how it all worked
and came about. They asked good questions but the answers were
murky. I could have answered better.
They did not get from their materials that the Host schools
front the costs of bringing in Mr. Remarck to give a camp and
that money was deducted from the amounts sent to USAT. Too many
hands on money. So as far as USAT is concerned, there are no
costs to Aspire, it is all profit as only the net is sent.
The original comments basically put it that the Cadet trip made
a profit after the Cadets forked over all that money and the
Junior Trip lost money. Lots of back and forth.
Basically the BOD members wanted to know why after all this
discussion about Juniors pay 25% and Cadets pay 75%, why no one
collected the Junior money. No answer. Discussion on are you
going to collect the Junior Money? no answer, lots of tap
dancing.
Some did not appear to understand Cadets paid their plane
tickets - that they did not give the money to USAT as the
spreadsheet they have suggests.
Some explanation of how this came about was because members and
a non-member raised money for Pan Am Team last year and they
were going to help again this year. Really? Because the
announcement of the Aspire Camps killed the fundraising.
Some discussion on the directed donations and did they go where
they were supposed to go.
More tap dancing. Lots more discussion on collecting the money
from the teams based on the actual costs and getting the Juniors
pay up. Nothing really settled, but my impression was that this
will not happen as there will be Aspire Camps in the future to
cover the losses from the trips. In the end, the numbers seem to
show that the staff expenses were not paid out of the Aspire
Camps, although I have no idea how they came to that conclusion.
Anyway, why would anyone want to attend an Aspire Camp to pay
for last year's trip?
I will agree with Devin Johnson's summation that the whole deal
was done on the fly, figured out as they went along with no real
planning. he forms may have said the amounts from the athletes
are an estimate, but that got lost in all the hoopla over Aspire
covering the costs. Communication to the BOD and to the
membership was poor. Execution was poor. No one thinks that
anything was embezzled only mismanaged and poorly communicated.
Finally moved on to forecasting for end of year. They had hoped
to have a forecast of $200,000 in the bank at the end of the
year but the forecast doesn't say that. No real explanation.
Gary Urie did a cya saying he assembled the whole staff and
verified his figures and that is the number. Bruce is going to
get with Gary to see what is happening.
No real answers to anything. Audit Committee to meet next week
to discuss same.
They went to Executive Session.

How much was raised?
From a TKD Training perspective Coach Remarck did a wonderful
job!
The idea is great...but we will disengage people if we can't get
our accounting practices in line!

They will have more to pay for the losses on the trips from this
year.

That is a lot of money...the real issue is this...they may lose
support from folks based on the lack of
transparency....grassroots support will dry up and that will be
a real shame....the tkd community came together for a
cause....we should build on that....we are losing a real
opportunity to gain back trust...it is not to late....provide
the accounting...transparency will stop all the conspiracy
theories...as of now we just fuel them because we have no clear
accounting of the aspire camp funds...
