Separate Nationals for Juniors and Seniors & More Notes

CEO’s REPORT – MAY 2014
National Office
The USA Taekwondo National Office has made additional staff
changes.
-
moving to the Events Manager Position, effective 2 June 14.
Jeanna Mendoza remains our Events Director.
-
Membership Services Manager, replacing Sarah Randall, effective
2 June 14.
-
is hired to become the Receptionist/Administrative Assistant,
effective 2 June 14.
We still have a vacancy for a Director of Marketing and
Communications that I expect to fill early in the month of June.
This person would replace Kevin Loughery, who resigned earlier
in May.
I am also planning to hire a Chief Operating Officer/Chief
Financial Officer. I would like to have this person on staff
within the next three months.
Both proposed hires, the Marketing/Communications Director and
the COO/CFO, will greatly impact the 2014 annual budget.
Safe Sport
USA Taekwondo is working with Hangastar to make the changes
necessary that will allow our membership to be required to view
the USOC Safe Sport Videos as a prerequisite for registration
for membership, or for membership renewal. The timeline for the
completion of the changes in Hangastar is approximately 30 days.
To date, over 1100 persons have completed the background checks,
with more coming in each day.
UFC Update
UFC and USA Taekwondo have a signed agreement to work together
in a partnership, starting this year. An announcement will be
made by UFC at its July 4th weekend Fan Fest event in Las Vegas.
The “USA v. Brazil” matches between all of the US Olympic Combat
Sports fell through for this year. Not every NGB was able to
conclude the necessary preparations for that event to take place
at 2014 UFC Fan Fest. But, it will be revisited for next year.
2014 National Championships Update
Registration materials for Nationals in San Jose have been
posted to the USA Taekwondo website. Registrations through
Hangastar are currently being accepted.
Site Visits for Future National Events
Site visits have been conducted over the past month in an effort
to secure the locations for our national events through 2017,
and to be able to announce them at the 2014 National
Championships in San Jose, CA.
Consideration is being given to separating Junior Olympics and
Senior National Championships as early as 2016. This would be a
return to separate national championship events for Juniors and
Seniors, prompted by the increased participation numbers
currently experienced at the combined National Championships. No
immediate decision will be made, pending a review of the
participation numbers for 2014 National Championships.
CEO Funding Initiatives
I would like to offer limited financial support to our National
Poomsae Team that will travel and compete at the 2014 Poomsae
World Championships. This group of Taekwondo athletes has
annually funded their own way to international Poomsae
championships while representing USA Taekwondo and the United
States of America. Upon review of our financial status, I would
like to be able to determine a limit for funding support for
this National Team.
The USA has been granted the hosting of the 1st Deaf World
Taekwondo Championships. This event will take place in Reno, NV
at an estimated cost of $35K.
We are initiating a USA Taekwondo Foundation. The purpose of
this foundation is to solicit supporters/donors who will
contribute a minimum of $10k annually to support USAT
International Events. The incentive for this group is that they
would have priority consideration for traveling with our
National Team(s) to international events as Honorary Team Leader
or Honorary Team Manager. The proposal is to have 15-‐20
persons as members of the Taekwondo Foundation by 2015.
USA Taekwondo has partnered with Korea Tourism Organization in
an effort to jointly promote the Taekwondo Park in Muju, Korea.
USA Taekwondo will receive revenue for allowing KTO to fund a
VIP Banquet at this year’s National Championship. We will assist
in inviting 100 Grandmasters, Masters, School Owners, and
Coaches to this banquet, at no charge to them. This partnership
with KTO allows us to return to a former tradition of having VIP
Dinners at our National Championship.

Where to start. Where to start...
1) "Both proposed hires, the Marketing/Communications Director
and the COO/CFO, will greatly impact the 2014 annual budget."
REALLY? He's kidding right? Who would have guessed that paying
someone else extra to do his job would impact the budget?
2) Separate Junior and Senior Nationals.
First it was his plan to separate sparring and poomsae. Then it
was his desire not to hold team trials. Now he wants separate
junior and senior nationals. Bad idea. This involves coaches
and many families having to travel to two tournaments. Add to
it the parents who act as volunteer chaperones, "assistant
coaches" "team managers" etc for some of the schools and you
have a complete mess.
3) a dinner for Korean big wigs.
This is all Bruce ever wanted. Heck, maybe we can get him to
resign and leave the rest of the USAT alone in exchange for
letting him sit at the "big kids" table with his masters.
Nah, who am I kidding. They would never let him.
