Strategic Plan
By: Bagehot Date: February 18, 2015, 4:23 pm
---------------------------------------------------------
The "New Board" is leaving a distinct impression of being highly
impressed by itself, but without much to show for it.
The last "minutes" posted date from November, 2014.
In reviewing the Board minutes of 5/27, 2014, two things were
notable. The USAT had adopted a Strategic Plan, which it stated
would be made available to the Membership on the website. If it
was, I can't find it. The Strategic Plan is one of the most
important planning tools, communication tools, and donor
solicitation tools. If it has a policy, this Board's policy is
to pontificate some broad generalities, and then fail to follow
through. Apparently they failed to post the Strategic Plan. You
know guys, that's what "Minutes" are for ....
Noted, in those Minutes, "Goals for 2014:
MEMBER SERVICES
• Develop an organizational plan that improves the overall
effectiveness and supports the growth of the
USAT organization
o Establish USAT customer services standards, i.e.24 hour
email/call response time.
o Develop plan to improve overall experience of each member
including athletes,coaches/club owners, referees and supporters
relative to fees paid/time invested and benefit received.
'
SUSTAINABLE REVENUE BASE
• Increase'USAT'membership'base'to'20,000'by'the'end'of'2014''
• Broaden'the'revenue'mix:'
o Add'1'additional'sponsor'>'$50K'
o
Increase'existing'sponsorship'dollars'by'10%'or'$30,000'for'2015
'contracts'
Now, I like goals as much as the next person, but these are the
signs of a disfunctional board.
Firstly, these aren't goals, they are pipe dreams, a list of "it
would be nice ...".
Secondly, how were they to be achieved?
Who was to undertake these projects?
What was the time frame?
What were the results?
But, more importantly, here is what happens when Boards try to
manage organizations. These are goals the Board set for ...
somebody, hard to tell. This Board likes to dominate committees,
and much of this would be committee work, so when none of these
goals are achieved, who gets the poor marks?
I am looking at that 20,000 member goal, and wonder, just who
came up with that? How? Did the tiny thought enter any of those
vast brains that "it ain't that easy," and the organization
needs a very specific, targeted plan in order to even begin to
increase membership by the amount set as the goal?
Is there any assessment of the failure to achieve goals, and any
after-action analysis of "how to fix it?"
I don't know. Since no minutes have been posted in the year
2015, can't really say. I know I would sure like to donate to an
organization like that.

Don't suppose they have done a year end evaluation of the BOD
and its effectiveness?

"USA-‐Taekwondo Staff is developing a revised Membership
Fee Structure for implementation in 2016. The following is DRAFT
version 2. USA-‐Taekwondo intends to announce the planned
membership fee increase by the end of the year, so that the
membership will have a one-‐year notification before a
fee increase."
from 11/2014 BOD Meeting They missed the deadline for this, but
what else is new? Since it is nearly March, would this be a 9
month notice or did they ditch the whole draft proposal?
