Don't Pay Dues to USAT

Once again the tournament in Las Vegas on Feb 14-15 doesn't have
enough qualified referees but USAT is still charging $50 to
attend the seminar. Even though members on the USAT website
asked for free seminars so we could get certified and take part
in the nationals, USAT refused. USAT has proven once again,
money making is its only concern.
USAT doesn't care about members. Period.

In the end result, will stopping dues hurt the USAT? Membership
dues do not make up the majority of income. Athletes still have
to compete and they still have to join.
The bigger issue here stems around not recognizing and dealing
with an issue that has been around for over 10 years. There is
no referee pipeline into the elite levels and there is not a lot
of current attempts to rebuild that pipeline. Refereeing is a
thankless job which costs a lot of money for a hobby which gets
you browbeat by coaches, parents, athletes and in some cases
other referees. Newer referees don't like and won't put up
with conditions the older referees not only endure but expect
new recruits to follow.
I totally agree that Referee Seminars should be free in many
cases. In the past there have been events - work the event, get
the seminar and upgrade free. Looking at the financials,
expenses versus income on these seminars, USAT makes money off
the referees who pay their own expenses and get minimal support.
This is not a current problem. It is one that needs to be solved
as frankly the referee corps hits the very heart of the
organization and its operations. In a few years things will be
even worse. Consider - what is the average age of the referees
you see at Team Trials? old enough for grandchildren? What is
the percentage of younger referees coming up? work the numbers
and then start worrying. The pipeline is almost non-existent
and the upper level of said pipeline is aging. Where does that
leave the athletes, especially at the state level.
That is the problem that needs to be resolved.

I'm reading a very good knowledge up here. I have never read a
story where they come from before me.
