Weapons don't matter normally it's build my rangers build I use
Sword/Dagger and Axe/Torch along with a black widow spider and a
reef drake but that pet just compliments my build it won't work
for everyone.

No problem wolf with fear ability tends to be a good standard if
your having trouble picking a pet

Oh, and is it true that putting 30 into beast master is good or

I don't remember I deleted my ranger very long ago but he was
incredibly hard to kill and could deal a lot of damage.

Mostly me my pet was just for supportive and to be annoying the
pet skill I had immobilized people and also launched random
posion AoE fields and since I used lots of finisher moves I took
advantage of that but primarily most damage came from me my pet
was just to annoy lol

If I'm going to create a character I create a powerful class
1vsX build I always have an oh crap! button on all my characters
so incase something happens they can quickly escape or at least
give a bit of a chase lol in terms of power though for 1vs1
Thief > Warrior (not in PvP) > Mesmer > Ranger > Guardian > Ele
I haven't tested other professions enough and my time on ele was
just making a troll 30 second burn build with extreme condition
damage
