       Screwcutting a .22LR

Does anyone know of any cheap way to get a .22 lr screwcut, cos
i have a remington 552 semi auto that i would like screwcut, but
gun dealers want over £100 to do it. I would really love a
       silencer for it :)

Without the correct tools it can be difficult. Even if the
barrel was the correct diameter to accept a 1/2" UNF die
(assuming this is the thread you'd want), it would be difficult
to cut accurately. Any run off on the thread would give you
problems. On the other hand, if you felt confident, you could
buy some cutting compound, a die bar and the correct die and do
it yourself. This is providing the barrel is of the correct
diameter in the first place. Otherwise it will need turned down
on a lathe or other specialist machine.

I thought of taking it to an engineer, but people tell me it
needs to be exactly perfect cos if its of by 1 milimeter it will
       cause problems.

       Hey
Yes be cearful as if the mod is not dead straight with the
barrel the round will fly straight into the mod at which point
       £100 would be cheap!! :-\

Did the £100 quoted by the dealer include reproofing the barrel
or was it just for the work?
I think that when you have a barrel screwcut it means that it's
rendered out of proof, which is grand if you're for keeping
it,but if at a later stage you wanted to sell it on,it would
       have to be reproofed.
I had thought of getting my hmr shortened, and was quoted £40,
just for the work, but in the end left it as it was.

yes thats it cut and reproofed for £100. the gun cost me very
little to buy so it wont matter if i want ot chnage it, i'll
just scrap it when i want to upgrade

Just to let everyone know, i got my rifle screwcut by an
engineer. He only charged me £20 and it seems to be a really
       good job.

I know this is an old thread but who did the work for you? I
would like to get my barrel shortened and re-threaded.?
