Anybody into Czech Nymphing?
By: woodcock1 Date: March 11, 2013, 3:10 pm
---------------------------------------------------------
Last year I had a go at this technique after watching a fellow
angler having great success one afternoon in bright sunshine in
the middle of august. I was moping round the bank waiting for a
dark cloud or dusk which ever came firs so the trout (and
salmon) would start taking the dry fly. in less than 1 hour this
fella had landed no less than two salmon and 3 good trout one of
which was almost 6lb. He never cast anymore than 15ft up stream,
fishing two very heavy nymphs about 18" apart. He would let the
flies drift down with the current and pass within a few feet
either side of him. There was never more than a foot of flyline
on the water. He gazed at the end of the line (no indicator) and
with any twitch or movement at all he struck.
After a while a approached him to congratulate him on his
success and he was more than willing to show me a little about
what he was doing. He then tied me up a rig and gave me two
flies and sent me off to have a go. I tried on a few occasions
but never had any success like him. I also witnessed the trout
and salmon writer Michael Short catch a couple of salmon using
this technique on the same beat one day.
Im looking forward to having another go. Ive tied up a few
nymphs of my own, bought a new line and am hoping to improve on
my few previous attempts. Anyone else ever fish this way?

The beat on the lower bann where I fish is fantastic for
upstream fishing. We get loads of salmon on the dry fly. Small
size 14 sedges usually. They just take like a wee trout and its
only when you strike when you realise what you have on. Its the
only place I know where salmon are caught in such numbers on the
dry fly.
