It probably took you about ten times longer to explain parallax
adjustment than actually do it! :)
I don't do all my foxing at night, and enjoy dusk forays when,
lying prone with the rifle on the bipod I have all the time in
the world to ping the fox (or bunny) with my laser range finder,
dial the distance, adjust my parallax (I prefer to shoot on 20x
when doing this), get comfortable, and take my shot. All this is
done in the knowledge that the animal in question is blissfully
unaware of my presence. The only prerequisite is finding a
firepoint overlooking a nice bit of ground with safe firing
opportunities in various directions. With this comes the chance
of quarry from 50 yards to 400+. This is my kind of hunting. :)
For the record, when foxing at night I don't bother with
parallax adjustment (Leupold VX3 6.5-20x50 LR) but rather prefer
to keep the magnification lower (8x) which minimises parallax
error. Also, good cheek weld is critical in minimising the
effect, so an adjustable cheek piece or padded riser is another
option. Repeatability is key when looking through the scope.
I've had a look through an accucover and personally didn't like
it, but as you say, whatever floats yer boat. If we all liked
the same things it'd be a boring old world.

which the accucover provides ;) lol oh dont get me wrong i
normally have comb risers etc attached, but ive found on some
rifles its been a pain removing the bolt with them on (or having
them as high as you need) so i dont like to rely on them, plus
as im sure you know your head changes position on the stock if
youre prone/standing, etc, and as sods law dictates if its the
perfect height for when youre prone you will off when standing,
etc. on top of that i keep the same magnification power on my
rifle at night as i do during the day, it helps being able to
recognise the quarry size in the scope to judge the range
without a range finder, so i always shot with my 17hmr with the
scope set at 16 power day or night, handier for accurate
headshots.
other thing is i dont have a set routine when rifle shooting, it
could be day or night, dusk or dawn, raining or sunny, etc,
sometimes i pick a spot and lie up, sometimes i walk about
seeing what pops up, and sometimes its driving about seeing
whats in the fields, followed by a quick rush to get into the
field and get into position. sometimes i do have the time to use
the laser range finder, look at ballistic tables, check wind
speed with the anemometer and measure the shot angle to
determine the true range, etc, but for the times i dont (95% of
the time) its nice knowing that you just line up the arrows and
pull the trigger.
but as you said it would be boring if we were all the same, i
just know what works for me, and if it helps one other person im
happy ;)

Alan Dunn,
When you say you set your parallax by a clear sight picture, do
you actually check the cross hairs as well, as they can move if
they are just set as a clear picture? You need to do the bob
test with your head.

First thing to do is adjust the ocular bell, while pointing the
rifle (empty, with bolt removed!) at the sky with the parallax
set to infinity, so that the reticle is in sharp focus.
After you have confirmed this, and set the parallax correction
to ensure that the target and reticle are in sharp focus, the
scope will be parallax free. No need for the 'bob test' then.

yep, the arrows show up as silhouettes so still easy to line up,
tho i went one better and put glow in the dark paint on them,
think it cost £1 off ebay lol
