NEW CALIBRE .17WSM????

seen this in a magazine. .17WSM winchester super magnum. It
looks like a beast, its worth researching! 20grain at 3000fps!!
it would stop a horse! im raging just bought a .17hmr!

No need to be raging. It'll probably be a couple of years before
it reaches the market over here. That'll give the Americans time
to figure it out, and gun manufacturers time to make reasonably
priced guns chambered in it.

Lol, ammo won't be much more than the 17hmr, and yep, its very
flat shooting, but lets face it, at the ranges you shoot most
stuff the 17hmr is more than enough as rabbits you wish to be
able to eat. All it would be handy for is fox,mand whether the
PSNI will approve it for fox is something else, as upto now they
won't approve any rimfire for fox, although they turn a blind
eye if you keep the ranges sensible.
Basically it will give you another 50 metres on fox, but will
pulverise rabbits, so its a bit of an I between calibre, that
isn't much good if you want to eat rabbit,mand isn't as good as
a centrefire when it comes to foxes

seen a 17 centrefire in elite guns in newry the other day, was
tempted but bought a new hmr a month ago ffs lol. cant remember
which version it was, (think pete mentioned hornady??) tho one
thing im not sure about is how the wind will affect it (if the
hmr is anything to go by). personal opinion is youre safer with
something larger for fox than 20g, but thats just my own
opinion. keep meaning to stick the info into a ballistics
calculator to compare some of the new 17's with a 223 but havnt
got around to it yet.
ps not sure what you mean by the psni not authorising rimfire
for fox ben? ive had two .22lrs and 3 .17hmrs, and with everyone
of them ive told the psni i want them for fox - when i applied
for my 1st 22lr i said it would be used for foxes and it wasnt a
problem, and when they came out to interview me for my 1st hmr
they asked why i wanted another rimfire as i already had a
.22lr. i told them the .22lr would be mainly for rabbits and the
17hmr would be mainly for fox and i rattled off all the
ballistic info for the two, both feo's were happy and they never
questioned it, and as far as i can remember (cant check licence
as its still away getting address changed) the conditions my
rifles have always been something like vermin control and
zeroing purposes on land i have a legal right to shoot on, it
doesnt get quarry specific (like english licences do). are you
sure thats not just something your own feo has come up with?

Nah, a lot of people have said the same, PSNI won't condone
rimfires for fox. But I've shot fox with the 17hmr although
never go more than about 120 metres on cubs, 100 metres on
yearlings, and 80 metres on big fox, and that's with the 20
grain game point. With a 17 grain I would take another 20 metres
off each of those distances.
I have a 22-250 for fox too, and again, it just states vermin
too, so yep, seems like PSNI aren't calibre specific, except
they won't allow anything above 22 cal unless its purely for
range work, or you have completed DSC1 ???
FFS, I did both the Dutch and the German hunting courses (2
years each, 3 day exam each, and £6-8,000.00 each) and now they
want me to do dsc1 too ???
Just money for nothing here lol

dont understand why they cant allow you it as long as you still
have the certs, when i was looking a .270 they were happy
enough, i just needed confirmation from the latvian hunting club
that i was a member and would be using it over there for boar.
hmm think some feo's make up the rules as they go along ::) but
all my feo's have been happy with rimfire for fox, and
lisnasharragh never questioned it on my applications.... though
maybe they learnt their lesson when they sent me a snotty letter
after my first application saying i was an "inexperienced
shooter" and they were "inclined to allow me" one shotgun,
instead of the two shotguns and a .22lr as id requested... feo
told me to send in a letter, dont think they were expecting 3 a4
pages and more references lol ;D

Well, I've been shooting since I was six, and am now almost 60.
Shot pistols, rifles, machine guns, sub machine guns, shotguns,
in fact just about every make and type and calibre going over
the years lol, and documented too. Did the German and Dutch
hunting certs too, but because they screwed around with the last
variation, I got Basc on them, so they put a mentor on for 6
months lol ;D
And Lisnaharagh said NOTHING over 22 calibre, unless dsc 1. I
said I'm not after shooting deer, I'm after shooting boar.
Answer "that's not our problem, bigger than 22, you get a dsc1
or you don't get it" ???

BB, if you argue enough with them they will put it on, its only
their "best practice" to have dsc1. If you can prove, with
letters, invites and previous outings on boar/deer they will
grant it. There is nothing in firearm legislation or policy
that you must have DSC1.
A good covering letter outlining that you know that it is not in
any legislation to have the dsc1 and proving permission should
be enough.
i heard of a guy, who got permission for deer but did not have
dsc1, applied for a deer calibre and put forward a very good
arguement on paper and got it granted !
A few years ago i got a letter from a stalker in scotland saying
i shoot deer on his land and have permission to come back
anytime, and its on my fac that i can take my rifle out of
N.Ireland to shoot !
Unfortunately i dont have permission for deer over here
!!!!!!!!!!
i recently did the SACS deer rifle course just to have under my
belt, and i intend doing the HCAP qualification in Rep.Ireland.
I dont want to do the DSC 1 due to the cost, travel and time
scale (4 days), plus the dsc1 is not acknowledged by Coilite.
