what type of cover does shooters find is best for woodcock ,
over the years ive found whin bushes to be the best in the
places i shoot or if there is snow laying then i find conifer
trees or the edges of heather in a moss shoots well for me

I find it varies widely and seems to be very weather orientated.
Early season birds can be on very open ground in broad daylight
feeding round the clock to regain weight after migration, the
same applies in times of hard frost when the ground is only
thawed for a short time each day.Heavy frost sees them along
drains and streams whe the running water has not frozen and if
theres a holly bush along said water is usually a hot spot. As
you have mentioned whin bushes are very good especially in mild
and wet weather. I seem to think what dictates where they rest
on a particular day is the weather conditions at the time they
return from their night feed so even though it might be a fine
dry day if it was raining at dawn they might head for the heavy
cover of the whins or conifers.
One strange place I often find them but cannot pin point what
causes it is in open heather sometimes hundreds of meters fro
the nearest bush. I suspect it has something to do with moon
phases but not sure.

put 2 up this mornin but never fired a shot, I lost one last
week so I didn't want another woundie, put up five so far on my
own this season and shot one.

Going to have another go tomorrow, couldnt get out last weekend
so need to make up for lost time. Anybody else 'woodcocking'
tomorrow?

Yes it is 'illegal' for now. So is doing 32mph in a 30.
I got out today for a couple of hours as promised, disappointed
considering my first days success but more in keeping with the
time of year. Rose half a dozen birds, no shot offered by 2 of
them, missed one with both barrels...again, and had 3 first
barrel kills bring me to 11 birds so far. Also shot four random
pigeons, dont know why there were so many pigeons, they were
feeding on berries on the mountain, must be cold weather coming.
Also flushed an unusual pair for me, two impressive red stags an
8 and a 6 pointer laying up in some whin bushes. The dog didnt
know what she had flushed.
Heres a couple of pics of the terrain for those interested.
Woodcock flushed and shot from both these positions.

I dont own it no, but Im probably on it more than the guy that
does and thats twice a year at most. You more than welcome to
shoot it if you wish. Its in Co l/derry.
