I've just been reading some post on page 5 regarding the locals
and giving other (legal) shooters a hard time and damaging cars
ect were exactly is this proposed shooting ground woodcock plz
??

I was just having a think about the lease over the next few
years....
It probably wouldn't happen, but, what if a couple of guys
decided the didn't want it next year or the year after ? Do you
think it would be worth while taking the full amount off
everyone to cover the 4 years ? It would mean the person named
on the lease and those left wouldn't get screwed for more money
on down the line ?
Depending on how many u cap it at, say 16 for sake of argument,
and we pay £100 up front to cover the life of the lease ??
Just an idea

wondered when someone would start to think along these
lines....lol rem the length of lease before putting your name to
it.... :D
you get lease,, a few drop out cause they lose interest/have
less time to shoot/gets to expensive to travel so far and the
2or 3 that stick it out end up paying full whack....or make sure
there is a get out clause.... :)

Thats a fair point and something worth considering although I
think on a forum like this there will always be new comers
willing to take a space when someone drops out. I have no doubt
that there will be some opt out and possibly even this year. But
at £20 a year their place will not be hard to fill. Some people
may not wish to pay out £100 in one go.

It just outside the town of Garvagh. If you type Gelvin Road
Garvagh into google maps and zoom out a little you will see the
location. You can then use street view or use satellite view to
get a real good look around the forest.

Yes, I agree it will be easy to fill a space, I'm just playing
devils advocate and thinking of possible future problems !

Been trying to attach a draft shoot management plan but was
unable to do so so just copied and pasted. I just have to add
the names of all group members when I find out who they are.
Please read it and feel free to suggest additions or anything
you feel should be removed. This is your group after all.
1. Safety
What safety measures will be taken to safeguard shooters, the
public, Forest Service staff and contractors?
All guns will follow the BASC ‘Code of Good Shooting Practice’
and the ‘Shotgun Safety Code’. Temporary signs will be erected
on the day of each shoot at all main access points to the area
to be shot. These will be removed at the end of the days
shooting. The local Forester will be contacted by telephone,
prior to shooting taking place, to inform him of the intention
to shoot and to obtain information on other activities in the
Forest. Shooting will take into account other users’ interests
and the safety of such users will be a priority at all times. On
occasion the club would like to meet with the Forester to talk
over any issues regarding the use of the forest. At least one
mobile phone will be available at all times and where this has
no coverage there will an alternative emergency signal put into
place which will be confirmed with the local Forester.
2. Usage
Give details of guns that will use the area and the intended
frequency of event.
The club has 14 members that will be use the forest. The names
are as follows:……
On average, the club intends to shoot the area 4 days per month
with 4 guns each time.

3. Game release
Do you intend to release game? What species, how many, where and
what methods will be used. If release pens are to be constructed
state their location, type of construction and size.
The club has no intentions at this time to release any game
birds.
4. Shooting
What methods (e.g.walk up) will be used for shooting? Will the
shooting take place in a specific area? What provision will be
made for the retrieval of shot game?
A maximum of 4 guns will shoot the forest on any given day. This
will generally be made up of two groups of two who will be in
radio contact at all times and approximately one quarter of the
forest will be hunted on each visit. This will mean that areas
are not disturbed for up to a month between visits giving the
forest plenty of recovery time. Groups will be paired up to
ensure there is always at least one well trained gun dog
available for the retrieval of shot game.
5. Wildlife
How can you benefit the wildlife interest in and around the
forest?
The club will consult with the Forest Service in relation to the
culling of pest species such as corvids, foxes and grey
squirrels. The club is also willing to note any wildlife seen,
particularly of rare or protected species. This information will
be passed on to the Forester after each shoot.
6. Recording
What quarry do you intend to shoot and how this might effect
local populations of quarry species? How do you intend to record
numbers shot?
Our main quarry species are woodcock, snipe and woodpigeon with
the shooting of foxes and corvids etc when the opportunity
arises. We would like to shoot a maximum of two woodcock per gun
or a group total of 8 which ever comes first on each visit. The
number of woodcock shot will be monitored and adjusted if
necessary over the 5-year period. The aim is to shoot a
sustainable return over the 5-year lease. Numbers shot will be
logged by individual shooters and collated during the season.
These figures will be made available to the Forest Service at
the end of each season.
7. Other Information
Is there any other information you would like to supply in
support of your tender? (Please limit answers to space given).
The club promotes the use of cartridges with degradable wads.
Lead shot will not be fired over waterways in the area. No empty
cartridge cases or litter will be left behind.
We are willing to monitor and report antisocial activity to the
police and report to Forest Service damage to trees, roads,
bridges and gates after each shoot.
The club is made up mostly of experienced shooters and any less
experienced shots will be closely mentored to ensure good
practice and safety to a very high standard
The club wish to establish a good working relationship with the
Forest Service which may lead to the leasing of further forests
in the future. Every member will have their own personal
insurance with some of the major shooting groups ie. BASC, CAI,
SACS which will be available for inspection at any time and
should we be successful with the tender a detailed risk
assessment will be produced.
We are also aware of the new forestry bylaws due for release in
march and can assure you that these will be adhered to at all
times.
