Just tuned in to the forum, and skipped through the posts. If
you,ve not much knowledge of the lease system then don,t worry
it,s actually pretty straight forward, with points mentioned
already In the posts.
The leases run for 5years with possible extension to another 1.
The successful tender musthavesaisfied forestry with their
completed risk assessment/managment plan ie. takinginto account
safety, other users, listing weapons used, quarry to shoot,
emergency drills, and other best practice procedures.
A club can apply with it held in one persons name, three others
to sign as well and a list of all members too. Evidenceof
Basc/sacs/cai membership is also needed.
After talking to forestr staf this week, it basically is a case
of getting the risk assessment/management plan right. Basc and
sacs have both offered help with the completing the plan, from
previous years experience, but haven,t got off the ball, tis
year at the minute. Infact only sacs and cai actuallymentioned
that the leases were about to be published.
good local knowledge of the land makes all the difference,
particularly knowing where to shoot and where not to shoot. Just
in case you put two barrels into a wee granny,s poodle on a
forest path. ;D Knowing where the woodcock are, is also a
major factor, and other quarry.
But having talked further to the forestry staff, it really seems
that most submissions will get it right and then it comes down
to who puts the most money on the table! Even though this is
clearly stressed as not being the case on the forestry website.
The bigger affiliated clubs that have current forstry leases
also use a day permit system costing perhaps £30, where anyone
can shoot provided they are in certain shooting organisations.
So obviously they manage to circumvent the rule requiring all
members of the lease to be listed with forestry.
As woodcock1will tell you, it,s not necessarily a social thing
with perhaps a pair of lads having more success at the woodcock
than larger groups. And access can be a hassle too, a key is
provided for the forestry gate entrance. But usually only 1/2.
Otherwise it could be a 1/2mile walk to the best shooting ground
from a main road.
The rewards though are obviously worth it, I,e heard reports of
regular bags of @20 woodcock per shoot especially in Fermanagh.
Tha,s why the leases there are listed at £400 per year. Mine own
experience is asking the day permits and having reasonable luck.

I am up for it in the NW area for a small fee, getting rid of
the greys etc and a bit of rough, but dont want to pay the
earth. Benevinagh Muderhole road and surrounding area. Basc
Gamekeeper member looking to get the odd shot ;D

Just had my breakfast and re.read the replies on the post. As
usual, great ulster humour that no one else in the world is ever
likely to get, and a few replies that the wife shouldn't ever
see ;D
Bythe way, ithinkthisisthemost replies to any of mybposts, must
have all been pretty boring posts in the past!so mus try better
next time. :-\
Great comments from everyone, I think the ideas for forestry
spots in the north west are greta and should provide good
shooting for you NW lads. PM me if you need any help, do ask
basc n sacs n cai for help, the more the merrier! Even though
we live in a wee country, it,s still a fair drive to the N W for
some of us, so I think it,s too far for me!
What I,ve realised over the years, having watched the forestry
lease set up, is that the man/risk ass plan is key to getting a
foot in the door and then for the next stage it comes down to
whos got the most money. When I,ve been out with forestry
clubs, they tended not to worry too much about signs, notices
etc that we're listed in their risk ass/man plans and just got
on with it, using basic common sense. For example, I was never
asked if I was using steel shot, or fibre wad, even though it
was listed in the plan signs were never put up, forsetry staff
were never contacted about us shooting that day. So I would say
it is true that, once the successful person in charge signs on
the dotted line for the lease then they are responsible for all
actions or consequences. Pretty heavy burden, and a good reason
to get the man/risk ass plan right and ensure that all members
are singing off the same hymn sheet.
Getting vehicle access to long drives up to shooting spots is
the key too, otherwise it,s a 1/2/3 mile walk!
One key amongst 10/15/20 lads can be a pain in the ass!
Then the other point that is completely out of your hands, is
the forestry/council/other sports connection that will scupper
the length/renewal of a lease. Eg mountain biking could mushroom
in forestry areas ( as was witnessed on last nights bbc ni news
in rostrevor). So if they get a grip, the shooting will be
pushed to the margins, it happened in a ni forsetry ground
outside cooks town.
The problem is that if you shoot for "game" and don,t
target/clay shoot then you are a recreational shooter and aren,t
recognised by, for example sportni. So you,re down the pecking
order, and get shown the door first. Yet shooting is still
worth £45mill to the ni economy!

Good topic just going to share some of my experience with
forestry leases. Last year me and a number of friends all
decided to submit a plan for a local forest. Which was
successful. Then one evening a got a phone call from an
individual phoned me up and lost the plot with me because I won
the shooting rights of the forest. He threatened me and in no
uncertain words told me that I would not be welcome on the
ground. After some research I found out that this man had the
lease for a number of years and automatically assumed that it
was his for as long as he wanted. So just be careful and try and
find out if the ground has been held by a gun club in the past
few years. Ultimately I had to turn down the shooting lease as
it wasn't worth the hassle in getting my car damaged when I went
out to shoot. I know this probably was a once off incident but
some people think that they own the land. I still have the
management plan so if you need any info give me a shout. Where
abouts is the forest you are thinking of applying for if its not
to far I would be interested in coming on board.

I'd be interested in going in for the Garvagh forest, even at
£40/year what is it in todays money?
If the Forest service only supply one key why could we not get
more keys cut?

Last night I contacted the team at BASC Northern Ireland as a
representative of Shoot- NI explaining what we as a group wish
to achieve regarding securing a forestry lease, and if they
could help us in being sucessfull with our application. I await
their response.
If anyone with good hunting dogs would be up for meeting at
Gortnamoyagh tomorrow morning (short notice I know), we could
hunt a few of the rides and get a feel round the place to see if
there's anything there and get a general feel for the ground.

I'd definitely be interested in Gortnamoyagh.
Its a brave distance for me (Banbridge) so would only be once or
twice a year. As such was anyone considering putting in a bid
for any others? Don't mind travelling if its to different
ground, maybe as a group bids could be put in for other ground
as well and either you pay a bit more and get access to them all
or some pay for Gortnamoyagh, some pay for another bit of ground
and share?
I don't know anything about the application process!
