a dander today in the snow

I took a dander out the day after dinner when the snow started
to thaw a bit, I wasn't really lookin hard for a woodcock but I
found these two, the first one was a straight forward left to
right shot and a good retrieve from but as he never saw it but
the second one was a memerable one, Bud put him up without
knowin and I watched it fly in to heavy cover so I wistled Bud
in to send him in to flush it out when it got up itself hearin
Bud comin in on his sent, the woodcock crossed level with a
barbed wire fence and when I shot I missed but I saw the shot
pattern hittin the icy snow and blowin some of it up in the air
so I knew I'd missed him up the front goin right to left so I
shot on his left wing and by this time it was about 45 yards
away so I second barrelled him knockin him down, I called Bud in
as he'd know Idea it was down but when I look back at the bird
it was flutterin about the ground tryin to get up again so I got
Bud into the field and onto the direction of the bird I kept
sendin him back to he got onto the scent but by this time the
woodcock was over a wee brow and outta sight I kept tellin Bud
to go back until just about saw him stoppin so thinkin he'd got
the bird I recalled him and sure enough he came over the brow
with the bird be brought it back still alive so I dispatched it
very quickly, I was over the moon with this totally blind 100+
yard retrieve but Bud just started huntin again lookin more
birds. We walked another 1/4 mile for one more woodcock but I
didn't even lift the gun to it as I was more than happy with my
two woodcock I had. I'm sooo happy with Bud and the way he's
came on this season (his first full season) I'm lookin forward
to next season already and this ones not even over yet ;D

hmmmmm didnt want to go in the snow eghh, :o. good result and
sounds like he had a great retrieve well done bud!!!!

I'll be ready for Thursday don't you worry ;) the back roads
were slippy but the fields were right'n clear
