       my next project...
       By: babbyc1000 Date: January 6, 2013, 5:52 pm
       ---------------------------------------------------------
i bought a stock carver from america a couple of months ago, to
make replacement stocks and new stocks of my own design for
different guns. im in the middle of moving house at mo, should
be sorted by the end of the month (i hope) which has put
everything on hold, but ive been thinking of what my next
projects are going to be. i think ive finally settled on making
two new stocks for the cz 455. i like the thumbhole laminate
stock that comes with it but reckon i could improve on it a
       bit... :D lol

anyway the first is a mr1 stock by staffordshire synthetics; i
like the look of it but usually find synthetic stocks are poorly
balanced, so i think ill make a version of it in tulipwood
(poplar), its lighter than walnut and a bit easier to work with.
probly add an adjustable cheek piece and a bisley adjustable
recoil pad, just to get it set perfect, and either skeletonize
the butt of put a storage compartment in it, help keep the
       weight down.
  HTML http://i149.photobucket.com/albums/s76/babbyc1000/mannerscz02_zpscdf89a50.jpg
number two is a bit different, more of a target style stock.
again same problem, comes in synthetic. ive a similar stock to
this lying in the garage, came off a p14 target rifle (i
believe). bit of a different approach, but ill fit the cz into
the old stock, filling any gaps, then copy it into fresh wood,
possibly walnut. again ill probably go for an adjustable cheek
       piece and adjustable recoil pad.
that should keep me out of trouble for a couple of months, just
need to find a house first lol :D

       ---------------------------------------------------------
well typical me, ive started not one, but two new stock projects
::) i picked up a couple of cheap stocks on ebay that im going
to modify for the cz 455. heres the rifle as it is now
  HTML http://i149.photobucket.com/albums/s76/babbyc1000/0_zps187c6157.jpg
the thumbhole stock is nice, but theres just something not right
about it... ??? its nothing major but the thumbhole grip just
doesnt feel 100% right, so im going to make a couple of
       replacements.
first i bought an old enfield p14 target rifle stock. this one
will be the easiest to sort, just alot of shaping and filling
really, then ill probly duracoat the stock to cover up the wood
filler and give it a good durable finish.
  HTML http://i149.photobucket.com/albums/s76/babbyc1000/Enfield-Target-Rifle-A96606_zps39491666.jpg
second is a bit more ambitious... ::) i bought an airsoft
accuracy international/l96 sniper rifle stock. going to be alot
more work involved in this as the stock is a hollow shell, im
going to need to do alot of filling and reshaping to bed the cz
action into it, then once thats done ill copy the stock into
wood - sounds strange but i have a bit of an idea to use walnut
and give it a proper oil finish :D but ill see what happens
once i get to that stage. heres a pic, so far ive just gutted
all the airsoft bits out of the stock and set the cz action in
to check trigger position, etc, and give me an idea how it might
look when finished... fingers crossed lol

hey babbyc hope your neighbours aren't peepin at your window or
they'll get a quare shock seein that pointed at them lol
that's great work your doin there sounds like you're not afraid
to get stuck in and have a go and fair play to you, I'm lookin
forward to seein the finished job I have to say that's a dam
nice finish on the cz as it is now - did you make the stock
yourself ? , you said about puttin duracoat on the stock for
added durability, I've a semi with it on and I wouldn't mind it
on my 20 bore for grip and to protect it where do you get it
done and how much does it cost ? I've been doin up the stock on
for a Perazzi for my Dad this week that had been custom made for
someone, it's had a wedge set into the comb to rise it up at the
front to make it parallel but I'm dammed if I can cove the joint
were it's been glued -- any ideas ???

lol dont worry theres 6ft walls round the yard and the blinds
       were closed ;D
ah im always fiddling with my guns, especially the stocks, its
kind of a runing joke with my mates (that ben blaker will
confirm lol) that my guns always have something new on them. im
never happy with a gun til i know its set up as best it can be
to suit me, it took me over a year to get the mossberg 17hmr
sorted... and then i broke it ::)
the thumbhole stock on the cz came with it as standard, its a
nice stock but something just doesnt feel right with it, so
going to play about with the two new ones. ive a few mad notions
in mind for the p14 target stock, but ill say nothing yet til i
get a bit more work done *cough* folding stock *cough cough*
       side rails ;)
now the duracoat is easy to sort if you know what youre doing
when it comes to paint spraying... which i dont lol ::) i bought
a 2oz bottle of it on ebay for about £25 and gave a friend (who
is a car body sprayer) £20 to spray the stock for me (the grey
one with the silver/chrome rifle in it). i just taped off the
areas i didnt want painted (the recoil pad and the bedding
points for the rifle) and he sorted the rest, he was able to
give it nearly 3 coats with a 2oz bottle, took him 3 days to
sort. not sure what way leaving a shotgun into a garage would
work but if you know someone then its the cheapest and quicket
       way to get it done.
is the perazzi stock oil finished or varnished? best way i found
to fill joints, knots, dents, etc in wood is to put some shellac
in the joint and sand the wood over it, the wood dust gets
trapped in the shellac and gradually fills the knot/joint up. if
its a varnished stock youd need to strip the varnish first tho.
dont get me wrong im not a qualified wood worker or gunsmith,
anytime i want to do something i spend ALOT of time watching
videos online, seeing different options and methods before
deciding what will work best for me. one of the best places i
found is the midway usa site
  HTML http://www.midwayusa.com/General.mvc/Index/VideoLibrary
theres alot of videos in there, it and youtube are my go to
sites for info, though sometimes you need to watch the video a
few times and look up any stuff youre not sure about (like
shellac, its an alcohol based grain filler type thingy stuff.
       works well tho lol)
need any more info give me a shout and ill see if i can help :)

I do have a mate who's lives beside me who sprays cars for one
of the best repairs places around here so I'll speak to him
about doin it sometime - I'll not need it to the game season
anyway so I'm in no hurry, I look on ebay for duracoat - I'd
like it in green/blue like my auto .
I've had Perazzi stock stripped down with nitromorse and cleaned
it of with water then dried then wiped with white spirits, the
thing is this stock has had the top cut off it and a wedge glued
it to make it parallel along the top of the comb, my problem is
when stainin it back up again the new pieces of wood are
slightly different colours and are hard to match up but what's
worse is the glue lines on the side are showin up like black
lines and just won't go away, I've stained the stock and rubbed
it back down 3 times but each time it's makin the glue lines
stand out more, I think think the only way around this would be
to have the stock sprayed with colour but then that would hide
the grain and this stock has a good piece of grain in it -- any
       advice would be appreciated

the only things i can think of are either trying a darker stain,
or maybe sanding the glue line down a mil or so (just the line,
not too much wood either side), then sanding over it using the
shellac method i mentioned - heres a vid
  HTML http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_YJEhZ196m0
sorry i cant be more help i dont really have to worry about glue
lines too much, normally when making a stock if theres any major
cuts, glue lines, etc, i make a template stock first, then use
my copying machine to carve it into one piece of wood, heres a
pic of a stock i was working on for the mossberg 17hmr, the
pistol grip and forend were the original stock id made, with an
airsoft m16 butt attached and balsa wood strips glued onto the
       sides to fatten it out a bit;
  HTML http://i149.photobucket.com/albums/s76/babbyc1000/60754_549990068349760_76131419_n_zps9ab5b387.jpg<br
       />
then i clamp the template into the duplicator along with a wood
blank (thats just cheap pine i was using to practice with)
  HTML http://i149.photobucket.com/albums/s76/babbyc1000/531023_547332625282171_1478457513_n_zps5c093078.jpg
and then finally the new stock is finished, ready for cleaning
up a bit - sanding and finishing mostly
  HTML http://i149.photobucket.com/albums/s76/babbyc1000/29633_549990148349752_2092720227_n_zps46177012.jpg
if it comes to it and you really cant stand the glue line i
could cut you a new stock (once i get everything set up again,
moved house a couple of weeks ago), but youd need to do the
sanding and finishing yourself because i wont have the gun here
to be able to check wood/metal fit, but tbh id only recommend it
as a last resort - the carving machine is quite rough on the
original template/stock, it leaves alot of scratches in the
       original finish, etc :-\
