New Dog

Hoping to pick up a new cocker spaniel pup tomorrow ;D ;D Has
any one got one or have any advice on how to train him?

Firstly well done on you new arrival. Hopefully he gives you
many years of happiness and torment which goes hand in hand with
spaniel ownership. I havnt yet owned a cocker so cant be too
specific but most of the same rules apply to all the spaniel
breeds.
As far as training goes let pups be pups. Dont worry about
training too much in the first year, other than maybe very basic
things like sitting, staying and walking to heel if you require
such things. After that if you get the chance to run him with
another good hunting dog (sorry Im assuming you wish to hunt
him.) it brings them on very quickly. Introduce them to plenty
of noise, other dogs animals sheep etc in the first year. Cars,
people, take them to a river, gamefairs everything you can think
of, that way they grow up with all the sights and sounds of life
and don't become afraid of things.
I always introduce my dogs to shooting at gamefairs or clay
shoots. Park far away from the shooting and keep moving them
towards the shooting as the day goes on. If at any time they
become agitated or afraid just back them off or leave and return
another time until it no longer bothers them.
Anyway, dont worry too much about it for a year or so. All will
turn out good. Its their second year when the training starts.

Thanks for the advice Woodcock. Yeh, he will be used
occassionally for hunting . Can you think of any names, I have
been searching on google for hours trying to find a name. I
quite like the name Ruger.

Ruger is a good one. Shadow, willow, snipe, Coney Pip, jock, I
could go on but only you can name a dog. I find they tend to
name themselves. They have a trait or something about them that
lends itself to a name. My favourite was a dog a fella once got
as a pup which was unwell. He kept it in a blanket in the bottom
drawer of the stove in the kitchen where you could store
saucepans to keep it warm. It ended up being called AGA as that
was the make of the stove. Leave it a day or two before you name
it. Something will happen or he will do something to inspire a
name. Mine are all girls. Lass Molly and Micha.

Hi Natalie,
What type of cocker is it?
The wife has a blue roan bitch, lovely looking thing but
completely useless for the gun.
Just thinking for the future though, if she ever gets a new pup
then maybe I could get my hands on it for the gun. Ha ha.

hi natalie never worry bot training to much at he/she just the
basic,s like name at the moment just enjoy he/she then mayb sit,
stay never try and rush it and make they no what you want them
to do before you move on. i also find pups name themselves ps.
ull hada get a pic up when you get it and if ur stuck for names
im sure you could have a poll on here of what to call it. lol ;)

they always know best ;D
just cause that bush looks like it might hold a bird i cant
smell it so no amount of shouting is going tomake me go in
there....... ::)
yes all other spaniels are stupid ::)
ive got cute eyes so yes feed me.........
and this one is for the future........NO they dont run outa
steam.....
as you can guess i have a working cocker currently laying at my
side sleeping,,they make great pets workers loads of fun great
with kids ,,,,i use mine for pheasant woodcock and ducks no
probs on the flight pond amazing to watch her looking at the sky
watching for the ducks coming in jumps in for the water
retrieves joy to watch,great nose on them but most of all they
are loads of fun
perhaps the most valuable thing i could advise you to do is
"learn to trust your dog"........
the name will come just make sure its something you dont mind
shouting loudly in front of others if you intend working with
it....

good luck with the dog never had a cocker but as has been said
much the same applies as training a springer although im of a
different view as woodcock as i like to have my dog well
advanced in his training by a year old but everyone is different
just my way of doing it and does for me my last springer was
fully trained and in the shooting field by 13mths old

Hello & welcome to ShootNI, you've got loads of great advice
above for sure, the one thing I'd say too is not to rush the
trainin, makes sure your dog knows when you're happy with it and
when you're cross with it, very basic trainin in the first year
is enough, get to know your pup and build up a great
relationship with it so it's wants do do good for you, the rest
will come with patience - Don't rush - don't force the pup into
doin things it's not ready for, no more than 4/5 retrieves a day
for the first month - do this in a hallway were the pup can on
go out and back again with no distractions, don't take the dummy
of the pup right away - praise the pup and give it a wee rub
behind the ears or around it's chest. Sweep is a great name for
a Cocker .
