Did you ever go to shoot and forget something? Something
essential!

Took a notion of a shot at ducks again but It was 6.15 and I
hadn't much time. I lifted the gun, carts and duck caller. Stuck
on a fleece and a pair of wellies and headed out to the
Landrover. Met my sister in the yard who had came to visit,
chatted a few mins which left me really late and jump into the
landy and headed off. The splash I was going to try I havn't
shot this year before as there isnt much water there, it only
covers an area about 40ft square and about 2 miles away. Just as
I arrived It dawned on me. I had jumped in to the car and in my
rush had forgot A DOG.
Bol...ks. Ah to hell with it Im here now and ther'l be no ducks
anyway. How wrong was I. 2 mins in the 1st pair arrived
circling. Biff bang 2 down. One hit hard the other not so. I
headed of immediately found the dead one and while searching for
the woundy in arrived more. Two barrels this time and one more
down. I got a good marker on it and picked it easily. Within a
minute there was more. Picked out two handy ones as they were
descending to land and dropped them on the spot. The water is
max 12" deep and the were no problem to get.
That was 5 down , 4 picked and time to stop and search for the
wounded bird. While I was searching at least 20 more duck came.
I couldnt find the bird and left annoyed but happy with my
result. I will return in the morning with dogs and search for
it.

Great days shooting by the sounds of it. Shame about forgeting
the dog. On a nyt out lamping i forgot to bring out my magazines
for the .22. I had to load every round in the the champer in the
pitch black. :-\

Headed shooting one night and as I always do went out round 8
o'clock in day light shoot thru dusk and lamp the ground once
darkness falls. One night all was goin well untill reached into
my bag for lamp batteries only to find I had forgot them-had to
cut the night short!!

I went out one morning last year duck shooting,got everything
into the boat, decoys,rucksack,dog, petrol for the outboard and
then it dawns on me where is my gun thats right its still in the
house :'(

Never mind forgetting stuff where is this wee flash you where
shooting over sounds like a place I'd like to visit!?
But yea in the same fashion last minute decision I went for a
night flight with a friend only to get to the lough and realise
I forgot the gun, but we went anyway, he shot 4mallard and a
teal, at least I got to work the dog.

Forgot the lamp while lamping one nite last week. lol. no doubt
itll not be forgot about.

I returned next morning with 3 springers, searched all the
hedges and fields but never saw it again. Lost a woodcock on the
3rd of november, found it today just a few meters away from whre
I was looking. it was just a few feathers and a carcass. I was
obviously found and eaten by something, probably a bird of prey.

can i ask how quickly would you return to ground you had
previously shot for woodcock?

Never any less than 3 weeks apart. Apparently woodcock are known
to stay in the one place for upto 3 weeks at a time. The place i
was at today is where I have some of my first woodcock memories
and I visit it a few times a season just for the love of the
place. Every bush has a memory of a missed bird or a good shot
or some story to tell. Magical place.
