       Centrefire...probably .223
By: beanieboy Date: April 12, 2016, 4:37 am

       I have a .22lr and a HMR and shotgun, but would consider a .223
at some stage. Getting the rimfires was pretty straighforward,
but what about a centrefire? What do the PSNI do when they
receive an application for one?.....obviously a stated reason
for wanting it [fox?], but what about the land it's to be used
on?...do they inspect it? The farmer who owns the land has a .22
WMR, will they deem that adequate for fox and refuse a .223 for
the same land?.....sorry for all the questions, but there's no
point even applying if it's a non starter.

Just ask yourself the following questions and that should help
       you.
You want a .223 for fox control. Is that a reasonable request
for that caliber? Yes it is.
What acreage is the land you have permission for?
Do you have any real experience with centre-fire rifles? (If no,
you may want to do some further research as you may not be able
to answer the following questions accurately.)
Is the land suitable for the caliber? (personal experience,
Size, location, backdrops etc. A persons capabilities, rather
than the land, can actually limit rifle safe useage).
How many other people have use of the land for that or similar
caliber? (Is that number reasonable for the land?)
If you have any queries, you can contact me.

Thanks for your reply Neil. It's just a notion I've taken. I've
lost a bit of confidence in the HMR due to the many concerns
over ammo quality [although I've had no issues to date]. To be
honest, I'd consider trading the HMR in against a .22 WMR...a
.17 WSM would have been a nice compromise, however it doesn't
seem destined for these shores in the foreseeable future.

Did you consider the 17 hornet!
Ive one and absolutly love it,perfect walk about rifle for long
range bunnies/crows and very cable for foxes within range!
Ud probably have to consider takin up reloading as factory ammo
       is expensive!

The Hornet is certainly getting some rave reviews. I assume
being a centrefire, one will have to go a similar process as for
       22 centrefires?
