       Feral goat question
By: thompy Date: March 18, 2015, 11:24 am
       ---------------------------------------------------------
Just had a mate on the phone asking if I knew or could find out,
what Calibre is required for shooting feral goats. He has heard
a lot of different people say this calibre or that calibre
(though they have been people on the mainland).
Anyone know what it is here in NI ?

       From BASC Website.
       "Northern Ireland
For Muntjac and Chinese Water deer only- a rifle with a minimum
calibre of not less than .220 inches and muzzle energy of not
less than 1000 foot pounds and a bullet weight of not less than
       50 grains may be used.
For all deer of any species – a minimum calibre of .236 inches,
a minimum bullet weight of 100 grains and minimum muzzle energy
of 1,700 foot pounds is the legal requirement."
I think DARDNI advise the same .236 inch and 100Grain for ferral
goats but check with the Associations as they should have that
info to hand and where it can be found.

I read .243 was minimum calibre, and you have to have goat as a
       condition on your cert

Do you have link to the document or web page by chance? I cant
find the correct info on DARDNI yet.
I do think you are right on the FAC listing as a Deer rifle can
be for deer only. You do need additional wording ref conditions
for goats etc as far as I can remember.

Found it. This is from NIO Guidance on Northern Ireland
Firearms Control (2005 Edition I think) Check page 87 under
       "Other Animals".
"24 Authority may be requested to shoot animals other than the
usual types of game or pests, for example feral goat. The type
of rifle authorised should be appropriate to the quarry. For
feral goats, DARDNI advises the use of a minimum calibre of .236
with a bullet weight of 100 grains to be humane. However,
individual bullet weights should not be stipulated on
       certificates.
Expanding ammunition may be authorised for this purpose. "

       />
So a .243 with 100grn+ bullet weight with Goat permission on FAC
would be OK according to the above document.
