Question about Belfast building
By: JG505 Date: November 30, 2014, 11:56 am

I've recently started watching the television series The Fall,
which is excellent so far, and I had a question regarding a
building that's shown in the first episode.
Here's a screenshot I took of it. It's a bit blurry since it's
only shown briefly when they're driving past it.

It looks quite run down and I assume it's abandoned. Can someone
tell me what it is and why it's in such a state? I've been
searching around but haven't found anything on it.
Thanks.

It was bought by an entrepreneur a while back, and was supposed
to become a hotel, but it fell into wreck and ruin. It was
subsequently set on fire and suffered extensive damage.
Crumlin road jail (whoever runs the museum) have raised funds to
refurb the main court, and plan to include it in the very
popular jail tour.
Currently, you can go into the tunnel under the road, but the
door at the far end is locked. Eventually you will be able to
come right up into the dock.
Incidentally, this was the first courthouse to have a direct
tunnel from the jail to the dock. The prisoner would be led
along the tunnel, up the steps and would pop out in the dock.
It spawned the phrase "send him down" for guilty prisoners, i.e.
down the steps and back to prison
