First time firearms licence application

Hi folks i recently applied for my first firearms licence and
would like to know the procedures and processes as i have not
heard any word back :( I know they maybe quite busy at moment
but what is the rough time scale and steps to be expected ?

They will get in contact with your local firearms officer who
will then get in contact with you to arrange a home visit for
inspecting your safe.
Once the safe is inspected and passed, the firearms oficer will
send report back to firearms section and they will process
application.
First times can take a bit of time but you should get your
acknowledgement of payment shortly if you have not already.
I would hope within 8-10 weeks for a first time initial grant
for all the inspections etc and then variations or further
grants relatively quickly. my variations or further grants
normally between 2-3 weeks processing.
If you have heard nothing from your local firearms officer in a
couple of weeks, you could arrange to call with them and if they
would be able to confirm if they have got any request for
yourself through. I would give it a couple of weeks from
submission until confirmation letter and then 2 more weeks until
inspection contact then approx 3-4 weeks from then til that
lovely envelope landing on the mat and you skipping down to your
rfd to pick up your items in an ideal world where no one is off
on leave!!!!

Apparently initial applications are being processed as quickly
as 11 days at the minute providing you have your cabinet
installed and everything else is in order.

left my application in myself 2 weeks ago and have the cabinet
fitted and ready for inspection but no word back as yet

Applied for a variation 2 weeks ago and nothing so for a first
application I would suggest be patient it could take a month or
two. Possibly really quick but in my experience unfortunately it
takes much longer.
Hope I am wrong but be prepared for a wait and if it comes
quickly then even better.

I know my mate bought a new pistol and sent his paperwork in the
same time i left my application form in , he is still waiting on
his coming back :o
He told me his should have been back with in a week so i just
take it that the firearms department are pretty busy at the
moment

just checked my bank account and the cheque was cashed on

got the same letter on the 30th for a variation bsaozzy and
still waiting.
big-kev, its a matter of sitting tight and just forget about it
so it doesn't drive you mad.
my initial grant (beginning of this year) took just over 3
months! :o
They may be busy or may be on the donuts, or quite possibly
someone is off on holiday! (their fav excuse)!

I applied for my licence 6 weeks ago, and I have just received
it. Had bought and paid for a 12 gauge, so all the details went
in with the application.
This was my experience below, as I was surprised that there was
stuff in there that I wasn't expecting after getting some
"advice" from others.
I got first letter of acknowledgement after about 2 weeks.
A few days later, fao rang for a quick chat and said he could
call out that evening for the interview!
I didn't have the safe in, as I wanted to ensure all was well
before forking out the money but he said he would call anyway. I
was told by others that I would get my licence a few days later,
because the police would have carried out all their checks prior
to the fao visit. Not the case. He informed me that he would do
his bit, then pass over his file to the police and it was up to
them how long they took with their checks. He would then come
back when I had my provisional offer to inspect the case and if
all was ok, the licence would follow about 4-5 days later.
He came out that night and went through the details. He asked
the reason for the gun, what I wanted it for and the lands I had
permission to shoot on.
I had Google map images of the land and these were looked at
closely. I was surprised, as were other gun owners when I
reiterated the story, that the fao was now looking for a MINIMUM
of 400 yards clear land in any direction before a shotgun cert
would be issued. He also asked about hills and backdrop, which I
thought was only relevant to a rifle application. On showing
surprise at this, I was told this is the way it is now. I was
also advised I would have to be supervised for 6 months by a
another certified shotgun owner with more than 3 years licence.
(I thought this was only for rifles as well). In addition, I had
to name the supervising "friend", although I notice this isn't
shown on the certificate.
He asked what my attitude to guns was, and also what way to
handle them when out. He gave specific scenarios and asked my
opinion. Tbh, I was taken aback a bit, because I was lead to
believe there was not that much detail to the interview. It
seems to vary by police region.
He then covered all the answers I gave in the original
application again, and asked a lot of questions re the property,
security, dogs, lighting, safe location etc.
Finally he advised on safe fitting and location, and to ensure I
used min M10 thunderbolts or similar. Also if their were 6 bolt
holes, then all 6 were to be used.
About 2 weeks later, he rang me and said my provisional approval
was on the way, could I install the safe and let him know to
inspect. He called out the night after I texted him, and passed
the safe no problem. Licence took another 5 days. Apparently
the police do not do "licence prints" every day.
Certainly, there was a fair bit of jumping through hoops, and
more than I had been lead to believe by some people, but my fao
was decent and thorough and dealt with things efficiently and
quickly enough.
