warning .17hmr owners federal and hornady ammo problem

There has been a serious number of rifles being damaged by these
2 bullets. 2 of which I know personally
The problem comes from brittle necks which are cracking and
releasing pressure before bullets leave the barrel.
All. 17hmr ammo beside Winchester is made by cci and these which
have been causing a problem wen I first heard about it I said to
myself, Awell what's the chances of it happening to me then one
day got to split cases and got paranoid and stopped using.
Apparently the new batch of ammo doesn't have this problem but
as there was never a batch numbers listed as faulty how do u
know which is the bad batch?
Got some Winchester and there more accurate and a bit louder to
me. at 100m they were shooting 1" higher than other brand's so
tells me more velocity
Anyone had any problems with them?

I managed to get hold of a new box of federal which is from a
newer batch of ammo will hopefully be trying them today!

I ha a squib with federal last year, round ended up stuck an
inch into the barrel, lucky I caught it

Just took 4 boxes of federal back to gun shop for a swap with
Winchester.
Told them I'm not risking ruining my £600 rifles over a box of
dodgy ammo
was ask why are they dodgy because there splitting cases on a
regular basis and each round sounds different from the one
previous which tells me powder charges must be different.

Funny I only got my firearm last month and I had a mild heart
attack when I noticed the 3rd round I fired had cracked the neck
(17GR V-max Hornady) I went online and found quite a few people
talking about it. One had got on to Hornady and they explained
that it was due to the pressure in the HMR and there annealing
process. Some of their rounds can be over or under annealed due
to them being a non reloaded brass and not having the same
stringent process.
I've kept an eye on them since and seems that one or two will
crack in every 50 batch. Still seems to hold accurancy and
velocity however so the crack must occur as the neck is
contracting after the round has left. Is there a real danger of
damage?

Hi is their much difference between Winchester and Hornady hmr
bullets as far as accuracy / trajectory and stopping power is
concerned, I have just ordered an HMR rifle waiting variation,

I took the. 17 out today to check accuracy again as I have not
been happy with it as my first 17hmr I got 5 years ago would put
10 shoots inside a 10p at 100 yards all day long the new one
would put all ten in the side of a 40 footer at 3 paces.
So after reading loads about 17hmr,s online apparently they get
better after a few hundred rounds so give it a good clean and
took it to the field and rammed 250 bullets down it cleaning
after every 100 and we'll it worked it's now giving me constant
1" groups a 100yards compared to the 2" before so must be some
truth in it. I have put over 600 rounds though it now
I was considering bore lapping but had old ammo I didn't like
and thought worth a try going to test more tomorrow as I have
more. 223 loads to also check ;D

On the ammo, when I first got my hmr, I shot about 600 rounds of
Federal through mine and only had one slow burner, ie. heard the
click of the firing pin a split second before it when bang. That
batch of ammo was bought about 3 years ago. I've switched to
Hornady as they now group as well as the Federal did, although
that wasn't the case when I first got the rifle, and the Hornady
is a bit cheaper. I've seen my fair share of split cases but
I've never really felt it was effect accuracy to any great
degree.
Would definitely agree that my hmr shot better when after it had
at least brick of ammo through it. Now whether that's down to
me,the barrel or the ammo, I just don't know
