farm shooting

hi all
so i no this farmer that gave me a lot of land to shoot on when
i needed it i was shooting on it for a bit now and today when i
called up he was telling me he has a lot of issues with birds
and rats around his farm ie feeding trays and silos ect. so he
asked me if i could shoot as many of then as i can to reduce the
numbers the prob is i only have a .22 lr and i was wondering if
i could shoot them with this or would it be to powerful for this
type of vermin control. i was thinking on buying an air rife
just for this purpose as i dont want to tell him i cant do it
funds are tight ATM advice appreciated. ;D

Rimfires and farmyards aren't really a great combo, unless
you're shooting away from the yard into a suitable backstop with
nobody else around. An air rifle would be ideal. Some rimfire
rounds are available that put out 30ft/lbs or less, but they
tend to be inaccurate. There may be some members on here with
air rifles who can help out temporarily :)
.22lr rounds will go clean through any bird even at long range,
so if you do decide to go down this route make sure you know
where the rounds will end up.

i was thinking that. not really any back stop for bird as there
on the roofs and if i decoy them ill put hole threw his barns
and that wont go down good with the farmer :(

Another option might be a .410 shotgun, I'm starting to think
they're the best tool for rats, and would be useful on birds too

.410's are still very loud. Farmers can be protective of their
cattle and may not allow shotguns to be used. Never heard a
suppressed .410 though so can't comment on their suitability,
but an air rifle is probably the cheapest way to go.

same thing funds are tight could i just get a spring loaded air
rifle as they seem to be cheapish ;D

rats, sick of chasing the wee b******s around with the air rifle

For big bird numbers u won't beat a 12g shoty and a few good
crows decoys
I wasn't a shotgun fan at the start more into rifles but after a
few morning's decoying crow's round a friends farm I'm a convert
and find I get more pleasure from the shoty now

HI You could see if anyone on here that lives in your area has
an air rifle and maybe they could call on you when they need
some .22 work done

12G is hard to beat for craic if you get good use out of it over
a couple of hours.
