Will 'smart gun' technology make firearms safer?

Saw this on BBC website at
  HTML http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-27527691
A handgun that can only be fired if its owner is wearing a
special watch has been developed by a German company.
The gun communicates with the owner's wristwatch through a RFID
(radio-frequency identification) chip. If the two devices are
more than 40cm (16in) apart the gun will not fire.
It is hoped that the device will make firearms safer, but in the
United States, one of the largest markets for guns in the world,
"smart gun" technology is proving controversial.
       Cheers, monty

Just to play Devils advocate , what happens if the owner of the
firearm gets shot in the wrist, thus disabling his watch? He
wouldn't be able to shoot back. Many Americans see it as a
breach of their second amendment rights as it's another form of
gun control. I would tend to agree with them. More restrictive
gun control and possible personal safety issues are enough
reason for the idea to be scrapped.
Also you cannot make firearms safer. They will be lethal no
matter what, but you can make operating them more of a pain in
the ass. Something that most sensible shooters would probably
       get annoyed by.

Saw that before, tbh I think they're a pile of shite. If you're
talking defensive use of a firearm why would you want to over
complicate it? People seem to worship technology these days, yet
how often does your phone or laptop etc crash or glitch? How
often does it need charged? Are you goin to wear a bracelet all
the time? What happens if you wake up in the middle of a
situation, grab the gun and forget the bracelet? And also, most
alarmingly, think how easy it is for your pc etc to be hacked or
get a virus. Who's to say criminals wouldn't be able to turn off
your gun? Its been easy enough to by phone signal blockers on
ebay for years... Also I havnt seen the technology but to me it
sounds like its basically an electronic safety catch, would be
easy enough to remove/rewire if its stolen.
And as for most of our situations... I find it hard enough
remember to bring ammo or the rifle bolt at times, never mind to
charge the gun/bracelet and bring the bloody thing too. Also how
durable is it? I can drop any of my shotguns in a river (and
follow them in) and still be able to shoot.
Sounds like a great idea initially, same as a chocolate tea pot
       does, til you start thinking.
