Things that happen when I'm bored

Idle thought - mossberg could do with being tarted up a bit...

So instead of buying a new stock right away i thought id try an
idea out first. started with an old wooden forend and stock that
I had lying in a box, looked like this
  HTML http://i149.photobucket.com/albums/s76/babbyc1000/1157512_691991280816304_7537171_n_zpsf6008657.jpg
Standard beech/birch/whatever light coloured varnished wood, the
standard type. I came up with a stock colouring process a couple
of years ago, but never really got the chance to put it into
use, still had what I needed tho (not gonna bore you with
details). So I've spent most of today with stained red oily
hands, but this is the result so far

Not looking bad so far, it'll take another few coats of oil but
getting there. The stock is cracked in a couple of places (was
used as a template stock) but this is only to try the process
       out ;)

So I said in the original post this was kind of an experiment.
Left it to cure when I last worked on it and got distracted with
other stuff lol could do with about 5 - 10 more coats of oil, so
if i ever get round to doing it ill post more pics, but until
then here's what I used and how I did it
  HTML http://i149.photobucket.com/albums/s76/babbyc1000/Mobile%20Uploads/74E59D57-C4C1-4391-AE83-53C6491CBCDC_zpsf39ssctw.jpg
Found this ebony dye stuff a while ago. Can be watered down to
give different shades and effects, but the main thing is it
darkens wood down and brings out the grain alot more than
normal. The other stuff is regular cheap printer ink bought from
ebay, think it was £5 for three different colours.
Simple enough process, strip the old varnish with nitromors,
then use the ebony wood stain and let it dry (comes out looking
a bit like walnut when used on beech stocks). Once that had
dried and I'd lightly sanded the stock I started painting the
red ink on with a brush (may want to use gloves). I tried to
sand the ink in (like an oil finish) but went a bit hard on the
forend as you can see in some places, stock turned out ok tho.
After I'd the ink on I started applying oil coats, used linseed
and some other furniture oil I have. Biggest problem with it was
the red ink kept leeching out, so after 5 or 6 coats (and
looking like My hands were covered in blood) I decided to leave
the stock for a couple of weeks to let the ink cure (and forgot
about it). Good news is I just rubbed some linseed oil into it
and no ink leeched out so looks like its dried in and/or sealed
in by the oil coats I did already. Might stick a few more coats
on this week to get it shining like the double barrel stock in
       the photos...
