releasing phesants

might aswell get the nw section under way
i shoot a forest for woodcock but was thinking of releasing a
few phesants and was thinking xlayers. would i have to put a pen
up or could i just turn them out,
or wot age of birds would you recomend that would be self
sufficent with out needing feeding as cant put feeders up

without feeders they're gonna stray, and in a forest environment
that's more likely to happen as they like have cover for safety,
you could just turn them out (i've did that myself) but they
need to be 'street wise' I wouldn't let birds out wild under 16
weeks before August if you want to see some of them again and
still be good enough to shoot if you do find them, the area
would need to be well foxed or they'll clear your birds up in a
few weeks.
good subject -- where's your forest -- do you pay for the
shootin of it -- I'd maybe consider throwin in with you (that's
of course if you were interested ?) I'm now interested in
shootin pheasants so I'd leave you a couple lol

this is y i was thinking x layers for they would no the score, i
cant do feeders, could prob feed by hand thou. any1 no wot
price xlayers would be?

I have been thinking of getting a few eggs and putting in with
clucking hens to see if they will hatch . Then letting them go
on the Inlaws farm land . But i do think i would have a problem
with foxes !

x layers shout be around £4.50 but depends on their age ect, we
get get feedin from Beattie's in Markethill for our pheasants,
he's a great man to deal with, he'll sort you out with good
stuff & or cheap stuff, we get both, good stuff for the feeders
and cheap stuff for hand feedin.

ah used to get pigeon corn of a him. te foxes get a far
thrashing around the forest and with the older birds there bound
to roast away from foxes. just a thought i had, will have to
speak to other boys involved in forest to see what they think!
theyll prob not wana fork out the money for the venture. but
would be happy to shoot them if i did on my own

Keeping a few cock birds in a pen is normally a good trick, they
act as call birds and help to hold the other birds you release
in the area.

i had thought bot the cock birds but im not able to put a pen
up, might see if i cant get a few xlayer next year mayb 20/30 c
wot happens

Brendy, the only problem with ex-layers (and I know some may not
agree here) is that the couple of shoots I have known that have
used them reckoned they strayed like hell! The other matter is
that it would take some birds to fill the forest you are talking
about!

the way i was thinking is that there no were really around it
that they can roost so they would have to come back in to roost.
altough i dont no that much about phesants, but i thought tere
enough room in it they wouldnt go out especially if tey were
getn a drop of grub
