       Getting first rifle
By: angrymallard Date: May 13, 2014, 10:42 am

I've always been a shotgun man, and unlikely to change but Ive
been considering getting myself my first rifle for the
occasional rabbit and close range fox as and when required. Ive
been thinking about a .17hmr as I wouldn't be firing a lot of
rounds through so cost of ammo isnt much of an issue. I have
permission which is suitable with some good backstops, but is
it common for people to receive an open certificate for a .17
being their first rifle or would i be limited on permission that
       has been approved?
       Cheers Chris

i got a 17hmr as my first rifle, shouldnt be a problem as long
as the land is suitable for it,
       Cheers SB

I thought open and closed certificates were a mainland thing,
never heard of them over here before (but could be wrong). The
way it normally works (for me anyway) psni make sure the land
you send in with your application is suitable for rifle use,
but after that when your FAC comes back it says any land the
holder has lawful authority to shoot over (or something like
that) - then it's pretty much a case of you deciding if the shot
is safe (and you being held to account if it isn't).
Only thing you'll get is the 6 month supervision clause, which
most people get on a new calibre now, and which my old FEO
blamed me for being introduced lol :-[

Got my first .22 a few months back its just like babyc says they
check the land u supply with app!then its up to u to deem other
       land suitable/safe,granted you have permission.
6 month supervision is by someone who has held a certificate for
same type and caliber for three years!
       Thats the jist anyway.

Cheers guys, just a thought at the minute waiting for the summer
to start on the pigeons again. If I do get something i'll
probably be looking at something cheap and reliable like a CZ as
it wouldnt be used that frequently. I imagine it would be
possible for a full set up for around the £500 mark?

Call James at CZ uk. Great guy for a good deal. Tell him what
       you're after.

Unless you really want a new gun I'd keep an eye on here for
guns for sale, and check dealers for 2nd hand guns. Cz's are ok
(I currently have two lol) but they're not the only option. I've
owned 3 17hmr rifles, cheapest and most accurate/reliable was a
       marlin 917
