Do you need a license for an air rifle?

Hi Just a quick question, do you need a license to own a air
rifle? I have a shot gun certificate but Im interested in
getting an air rifle but Im not clear what restrictions apply?
Im not keen on getting a .22 as its a big step up from a shot
gun so I thought an air rifle might be a good in between step,
plus can I shoot starlings with an air rifle? and if so what
kind of power would I need to be getting.

Assuming your in norn iron - Yes you need a license.
As for shooting starlings??? Check the BASC website in case they
are protected over here.

Yes u will be required to put the air rifle on your FAC. As for
power wise, people in England are using sub 12ft/lbs air rifles
to take rabbits and birds in around 45 yards.

when its on fac can you have any power air rifle you want?
only asking as im english and only been over here for 4yrs and
we have differant laws over there (sub 12ft/lb dont need to be
licenced)

Yes over here most of us hold Fac rated air rifles as you need
the licence to hold any firearm , so you might as well get the
higher rated one . One thing to remember with Fac rated air
rifles is that some of them are as powerful as .22 rimfires .
The pcp air rifle i have puts out about 30 ft-lb and you can get
higher than that !! .....

Thanks lads - yes I'm norn iron based, given that most over here
would be over the 12 ft/lb would a 2nd hand one under that be
difficult to come by ?

Maryland Country Sports in belfast have a good selection of 2nd
air rifles. I think he still has a 80ft/lb Daystate up for grabs

on the note of getting an air rifle, you dont need anything over
30ft/lb, really no call for it, used to big into air rifles
years ago, i had a falcon fn 12 in .177 was 12ft/lb and i was
capable of killing rabbits 80 yards and done it on a regular
basis, i have seen my dad kill rabbits out 100 yards with his
.22 theoben rapid 7 and it was 26ft/lb its all about knowing
your gun i used to shoot field target and sporting field
target... but the whole point of air rifle shooting is to stalk
in on your quarry, dont think about power of the air rifle this
is where people get into their heads the more ft/lbs the better,
which is total bollox, plus the more ft poundage the less shots
you get before you need a fill

Have to agree with Goshawker 30 ft-lb is plenty for an air rifle
!!!Mine does everything i ask of it and a bit more ..

In NI they don't have the sub 12 ft/lbs free rule. Any weapon
with a barrel that is capable of firing a projectile of equal to
or greater than 1 joule (0.635 ft/lbs) in NI requires an FAC
(funny, but cross bows and bows don't !)
My springer chucks out 18ft/lbs, and I can fit a gas ram
conversion to it for £70.00 that will push it up to 30-36 ft/lbs
or anything below that, whatever I pump it to basically ;D
