starting out in the air rifle world

Hello all,, new to the forum so I hooe you will go easy on me
       lol.
Wanting to get an air rifle, im 44 so im guessing its a mid life
       crisis!
But boy is it hard to get sorted.
Went to my local shop (beatties in ballycarry) and was chatting
with him. Told him I wanted to get 2 rifles for myself and my
son who is 12 years old. Mainly for setting up a few targets in
a field and having a bit of "father/son time" at the weekends.
moving onto vermin once we both start to get better.
to my surprise he said forget it. You would not get a fac for 2
rifles which are both .22 as the psni would want to know why I
wanted 2 of the same calibre.
Is this true? Would they refuse the fac because of this?
Then I went off and rang a couple of farmers asking permission
to set up a few targets on their land for practise, letting them
know I would be clearing up an mess when finished. I was
surprised when they ALL refused... I thought being an airrifle
there would have been no problem.
the stock of rifles in beatties is very small. All single shot
springers. He has a wee springer with scope/bag/ pellets for
£150. I asked about a pcp and he said he doesnt stock them but
if I bought online it could be delivered to him for a small fee.
Problem is if I do that but cant get any permissions or get
turned down for a fac then iv purchased a rifle which I cannot
       use....
Even though we are in northern ireland, I never thought it would
be this hard to get started out...
       Any help/tips folk??

I wouldnt go any further until you can get some permission
sorted. get that and that will start the ball rolling. good
       luck.

If you were in England Thompy, you'd be flying. Sub 12FPE
airguns over there can be bought over the counter, but here
       everything goes on FAC!
Problem is you need to specify a need to own one. That's either
pest control or target shooting. "Plinking" doesn't count as
target shooting. You'll either have to join a club or else get a
farmer that has a rabbit or pigeon problem.
Some of the air rifle target lads will be able to shed more
       light on it for you.

       Hi Thompy.
I have 2 air rifles in .22. I would have no problem
getting more if I wanted. I know a guy who has 4
of the same calibre. He has 1 down for shooting
in barns, another pcp for rabbit control, pcp for
night shooting with Night vision and another for
       club use.
If you wanted to try out a few rifles before you buy we
have a air rifle club out near Castlewellan, we shoot
most Sundays. You are welcome to come along.

Many thanks to all who replied.
       some great advice there.
Snap I might just take you up on that, bit of a drive from
carrickfergus but would be worth it for the advice I could pick
       up from the guys.
       thank you once again

Well its now been 8 days since I applied and havnt heard a thing
       from psni.
Rang them today to see if they had recieved my application yet
which was put through psni internal mail.
To my surprise the answer was no....
And there was me thinking putting it into internal mail would
have been the fastest method !

From what i gather internal mail is the slowest way to do
anything and that came from a psni officer lol

Hand delivery to Lisnasharragh is always the best method.
Internal mail could sit there for weeks. No use to you now
though lol. Just a waiting game. Some initial applications from
a couple of years ago took over a year, and quite a lot took
over 8 months to process. The FEB seem to be putting initial
grants through within two to three months at the minute. Best
thing to do is forget it for the time being, otherwise you'll
wreck your head thinking about it.

Dan mate heads wrecked already.. lol
Cash burning a hole in my pocket and dont want to spend it!!!
Another interesting thing that the officer said to me.
You do not have to have a cabinet installed for when the feo
       calls out.
You can wait until you are granted the licence. Then they will
hold the licence and the feo will call again to make sure its
fitted before they release the licence to you.!
Reason being was everyone rushs to get a cabinet installed and
some get turned down for various reasons, leaving them with a
       empty cabinet and no licence.
I thought the job of the feo was only to come and check the
       cabinet!
