What to buy .222, .223 or 22 - 250?

In the notion to buy a center fire rifle for foxing and long
range rabbit shooting. What should i go for a .222, .223 or a 22
- 250? I dont really know any of the advantages/disadvantages
over each other, could anyone enlighten me?

Hi Jacob,
I admit I don't have a clue about center fire except that they
are a real over kill for rabbits and ammo is very expensive. ie.
.222 £19.00-£27.00 per box of 20
.223 £21.00-£27.00 per 20 and .22.250 £12.00-37.00 per 20 This
is just an estimate of Dauntsey Guns over the shuck. But i'm
sure you'll get more positive answers from someone a lot more
knowledgeable than me. Some of the guys on this forum a real
pros and know their sh--e. My guess would be a.17 hmr or a .22
wmr Just my opinion.

.223 will do everything barr deer (although it will take deer
it's not a deer legal caliber over here) 22-250 is a quicker
round than .223, and can take foxes at ranges beyond that of the
.222 and .223. Rounds are expensive though for all the calibers,
but .223 is the most common and in most cases the easiest to get
hold of.

I've found my .222 very accurate, in fact as .222 was originaly
developed as a bench rest rounds it gets the name of being more
accurate than .223 and .22-250 (I think alot of the records it
set still stand today). Being honest I wouldn't advise going for
.222 unless you're intending to reload, can only ever get 3 or 4
boxes of the same ammo at a time. Also they usually only come in
a 1-14 twist so not great if you want to use heavier weight
bullets. Mines doing ok with 55 grain loads at mo, and I've also
been able to work up a low power load using 40 grain rounds,
it's giving similar performance to a .22 wmr (from what I've
seen so far) so is better than full power on rabbits.
.22-250 has more powder in it than both .222 and .223, so has
more power and/or a longer range, but rounds are a bit more
expensive and they have a reputation as being barrel burners
(shorter life then the other two). Having said that .22-250 is
legal for deer hunting down south so it always gives you that
option.
.223, as already said, rounds are easier to get. Also more
options available, different twist rates, etc, and far more
models of guns available chambered for it.

I've got a 22-250 at home, and would strongly recommend that if
you go for it, you would also look into loading your own rounds,
(I'm currently awaiting dies) Its drops the cost down
dramatically. I've never had an issues with my 22-250.
If your just after a center fire, did you consider a .204?

I dont think theres much point in buying a rimfire, ur limited
to 150 yards plus if i buy a .17 hmr i hear the wind has a
drastic effect on them and its more long range pest control when
it comes to the rabbits so overkill doesnt matter. I'd like to
stick to something popular so .223 sounds like the way to go as
i hear more about them than the other calibres, as for .204 i've
never heard of it can it be granted for fox control and wats its
advantages over a .223?
What sort of twist rate of a barrel should i be buying?

.223 rem for me. can be bought fairly cheap rounds are not bad
aswell.

.223 for better ammo choice and better choice for reloading
brass and dies etc cheaper more common etc etc
.222 for less recoil but barely any difference from. 223
If your shooting in high winds a lot the. 22-250 would be a
better choice.
But the in between round is the. 223 and with more ammo
available and cheaper to reload than. 22-250 it's a clear winner
for most.
Also never buy a second hand. 22-250 as they tend to ware
barrels out faster than. 222 and. 223.

My tuppence worth, if its for mostly foxing with the very odd
bit of rabbiting go for 223 or if its mainly rabbiting with the
odd fox go hmr or 22 magnum & call them in that bit further.
Centre fire rabbiting can get very expensive plus you have to be
even more aware of your backstops, increased noise etc.

It'll prob be used more for foxing. 22 250 is out the window,
dno whether a 223 or 222. Wats the trajectory like on these two,
is there more of a drop on a 223 or anything?
