First post - Process of owning a gun

Hi all, so I've been wanting to take up shooting for the longest
time and have wanted to own a gun for a long time too so
basically I'm just wondering how I would go about getting one.
What I understand is that you have to have been a member of a
shooting club for a certain length of time, you have to fill out
a form and send it to the police, you need a proper gun cabinet
to store it in safely and that you need the reference of 2
people. Other than that I'm pretty much clueless, I looked on
the psni website and couldn't find any more information.
So please guys, if you can fill me in a little bit more I'd be
       really appreciative.
       Thanks in advance!

Before you even think about buying a gun, go to a club first.
Most let you at least try a club gun before you pay membership
fees. Try a few clubs even. Smallbore is a great place to start
       an can be fairly inexpensive.
Trouble is some clubs say they are full up with members.
Whereabouts are you? Someone on here is bound to know of or be
       in a club near you.
Be careful tho, it's an addictive hobby...

Sorry I should have mentioned before but I've been to a club
twice with my uncle, but he's been extremely busy for the past
year and I don't think he's going to be able to have the time to
go to a club regularly, so I've been wanting to go on my own. I
live just outside Belfast, near Bangor

I'd say join your Uncle's club an save up. Or best of all once
your year is up. Apply to have your Uncle's firearms 'on loan'
       to you.
