What is the range on a .17hmr?

Whats the range on one of these .17hmr if you were shooting
rabbits? I just ask cause i was out lamping last nite and the
boy i was with was using a .222 and we were dropping rabbits at
a good 200 yards or more, it just makes a .22lr look weak. So i
thought of buying a .17hmr for long range pest control.

In the right conditions they will easily kill rabbits beyond 200
yards - my longest shot to date was just under 180 yards and the
rabbit never even kicked. It is a light round though and will
stray a bit in windy conditions, especially beyond 100 yards.

Basically what Beanie says. I have used it over 200 yards but id
say 150 yards is the maximum.
Then the whole ethical hunting thing comes in. Nobody likes to
see a rabbit (or anything else at that matter) flailing about at
200 yards with its guts hanging out or back leg shot off.

Would a .22 wmr be a better choice then to combat the wind?

I never fired one tbh.
Id think you are into CF territory if you cant get in any closer
to them than 200 yards. Or an air strike ;D.

200 yards max I'd say, and even then 150 unless its prime
conditions, I did some target shooting at 250 yards with one of
mine once and wasnt impressed with the damage, the ballistic
tips didn't shatter (was an old aluminium sign farmer had lying
in a yard)

The WMR is more affected by the wind than the HMR - the HMR also
retains more energy beyond 100 yards - within 100 yards the WMR
hits harder.

Looks like a job for a center fire. Wat price would a new .223
complete kit be?

You could pick up a whole new Howa package in 223 for in round
£800 - £850, but there is tonnes of good 2nd hand gear around as
well.

.17hmr has same trajectory as a .223 out to 240yards apparently
then after that it drops like a hers knickers.
The wmr is a harder hitting round but slower so after 120yards
it drops fast.
I would say 150yards easy
Rrally good days 240 with the right person with range finders
ballistic computer and weather meter.
Or if I was me shooting it I would be hitting flys at 1000 yards
and judging wind altitude and humidity by sticking my finger in
some cow dung and giving it a good sniff a old trick my grandad
never told me. :P
