.17 hmr ammo testing

any of you lads with an hmr. what did you find was the best
ammo, i know every rifle is different but just looking another
round to try, i have tried the hornady 17 hmr rounds (red tips)
but honestly think there could be a better choice for my rifle
as they seem a little inconsistent . i get 5 shots in a 3/4 inch
group at 100 yards then the next group could be 3 inches. deadly
accurate at times.. then a load of flyers. any suggestions on
what to try next?

When I first got my hmr I tried Hornady and wasn't that fussed
on them. Tried Federal, and they were much better, so I bought
500 of them. When they were done I had problems getting them
locally. My rfd had hornady in stock, so I took a couple of
boxes to keep me going, and it turned out they were as good if
not better than the Federal. Best 3 shot group, 35mm at 210
yards.

ok so next question..... do you think maybe the barrels just
need time to bed in? that was my thoughts , but a mate of mine
is hitting magpies at 120 yards and cutting them in two. i hit
one at 100 yards with the hornady and it was hard to find the
entry wound and no exit. which made me think it was a bad batch
of rounds maybe, thats a hell of a grouping at that range !! :)

Aye, it even surprised me......... there was possibly a bit of
luck involved.
You could be right about the barrel bedding in, mine certainly
seem to shoot better now, but I can't nail whether it's me being
used to the gun now, a bad couple of bad batches of ammo at the
start or some other variable. I know at times after I got it, I
was pulling my hair out.

hmmm i guess time will tell. going to run another few hundred
through her and see. i seen online some people saying the stock
of the 452 touches the barrel too much and they sanded it down
and it really improved the accuracy of the rifle. not something
i would try though : )

Twas the first thing I did when I got mine, there was a small
spot right at the tip of the fore end touching the barrel.

I herd the Hornady in 17 was one of the most inconsistent rounds
mate , I'm not sure how true that is,, but ur in same boat as me
I guess we just may buy a box of 3-4 different brands and see
whats the best

Just wrapped a bit of sandpaper around a bit of dowelling
similar in size to the barrel then sealed it with yacht varnish.

Took a wee bit off with sandpaper as the barrel was touching on
my 22 right at the front of the forend, improved the grouping a
bit for me. Just a light sanding, takes very little to leave it
free floating again.
