when to start shooting over your pup

Was just wondering,, my friend has a wee 6 month old springer
and weve been training away at it and its coming on great, he
wants me to fire a few shoots off from a distance 2 see how the
dog reacts but im a bit dubious incase I scare it, when would
yous recommend to try it or what way would yous go about it, I
wouldnt want to put the wee dog off because its gonny be a
cracker

Should of been firing an air rifle near it already imo , feeding
time when it's tucking into its food

.22 starter pistol at a distance and walk the dog towards it,
reassuring the dog all the time,

The mrs has a lab pup and we shot a full slab over him at 18
weeks and he never lifted his head! Even picked up a pigeon on
the same day! My own springer was 10 months before she was shot
over I just made the mistake of letting her pick birds up now
she breaks if she's in a hide :(
Lab is now 10 months and had a few shots put over him last week
and no retrieves so going to keep it that way to try and keep
him steady for shore shooting

i always take my pups to a gamefair or two to introduce them to
many things, one of them being shots. You can stay as far away
as you wish to begin with. It just becomes background noise
after a very short time. Usually by the end of the day I have
the pup sitting right beside the stand without them taking any
notice. You could do the same at a clay shoot I suppose at this
time of year.

aslong as you have a safe enough distance between you with wind
possible the opposite direction 150/ 200 yards more if possible
and then gratually work your way closer but wouldn't shoot
beside pup on first day or even the second day for that matter
and then if pup was ok I would fire a shot of beside him but
only after repeating the process. and would never if possible
fire a shot straight of beside him. this might seem a bit over
the top but I wouldn't risk it. but most important make sure he
plays with pup with retrieves or treats but if the pups shows
any sign of stress stop and go back to start. hope this helps
abit.
