Alright lads first thing first happy new year to you all, as
above would like to hear your views on the above topic to help a
newbie out. Do a lot off people use there 22's on foxes and what
ranges do you feel you could kill it clean, also which ammo
would suit.

Funny a friend and i were having this discussion earlier. for
years his dad used a 22 with high velocity rounds for foxes,
does the job with headshots but you dont have much room for
error. Can't give you an exact figure on range as it depends on
your accuracy, but rough rule of thumb 80ish yards with high
velocity max. Thing is 22lrs don't have much stopping power. not
proud of it but I fluffed a shot on a fox one night at 25 yards,
spotted it at 75 yards and didnt realise it kept coming in til i
turned the torch back on. first shot didn't put it down so I
riddled it with the ruger semi auto, got 6 more hits into it and
it still ran 200 yards before it dropped. 22lr was traded in 2
days later :-\

Aye the 17 hmr can be a better job than the 22, but again seen
hits with it that should have put them down. A friend and I both
got hmrs when they first appeared, believed all the wonder gun
hype that was going round about them. Sighted in on a fox at 100
yards and both of us fired at the same time, one chest one
throat, it still ran off about 120 yards before dropping. Only
benefit with the 22lr is a quick follow up shot (assuming its a
semi auto) but thats why I finally got a .222 this year, far
more room for error, if its a hit its a kill!
Hmm 7.62? No point picking the fox up after that, all that would
be left is a few tufts of hair and a fine red mist lol :o

I've said it before and I'll say it again, the .22LR is a
capable and versitile round, more than able to drop a fox.
The skill and challenge tho is in getting the fox/you close
enough and being confident in your accuracy of a good head shot
if you want a clean kill.
Also, if you aren't confident of a one shot kill, then don't
take the shot.
Of course there are harder hitting calibres, that allow you a
margin of error and also enable you to place the shit elsewhere
for a kill, but then personally I feel I takes a lot of the
skill and fun away from the stalk.
