Shotgun

Was thinking about getting a cheap shotgun but have sort of
changed my mind. Thinking that with a shotgun you really are
better off with a dog for finding game or retrieving runners. Is
it worth while having a shotgun for woodcock snipe if you don't
have a dog. Have been out for a dander on a few occasions and
seen a few about but only have a rifle, don't want to injure
with a shotgun and not find what I have shot.
Any advise??

I shot for years walked up snipe with no dogs and lost very few
birds and the dog i have now doesnt retrieve you just have to
mark the birds down carefully

Suppose if you are a good enough shot and mark where they fall
should be ok.
Will see what the new year brings.
Got a few vouchers for gun shop and just thinking of options.

If the truth be told you shouldn't be shooting live game with
out a dog. It doesn't matter how good a shot you are you will
clip birds and have runners which could die a long and cruel
death if not picked. Me personally I wouldnt be shooting live
game without a dog.

Have to go with .22 on that one. Dogs can be a total ballache
but they can also make an average day special. I think theyre
necessary to give quarry the respect it deserves.

its the way to think but a dog is worth it they have there
moments but worth your time

A good dog is a key requirement to a good days shooting. It's an
essential piece of kit. Sure you get more enjoyment out of
working the dog than actually taking the shot.

I have to agree with this sentiment. It's quite common to have
to administer a coup de grāce when rough shooting, so anything
that can be done to limit the suffering of wounded game, should
be done.
