Want to start shooting rifles

Hi guys,
As the title states, I'd like to start shooting rifles. I just
got back from the states and had an absolutely amazing time
trying out all the guns at ranges and a bit on families of ours
private property.
Reading up on the laws here, it seems like you need a good
reason to apply for a certificate. What would be a good reason?
Wanting to join a club? Just want to shoot some crows lol? We
have 5 acres let out if that's any use.
A mate has a large farm and a rifle of his own. So the plan
would be to head up there, but I don't think this would sound
well on an application.
Anyway, thanks for reading - hopefully somebody might be able to
help :) I'd really appreciate it.

If u apply for a rifle for club use u can only use it in the
club. Get permission from a land owner and state what you want
to shoot on your fac application. Destruction of vermin is a
valid reason for wanting a rifle ie foxes or rabbits

welcome on board m8, im not a riffle man but seems to be the
same youll need ground that you can use it on firstly, or join a
target club which will be reason enough but youll not be able to
go out across the fields with it. good reason for having it is
for pest control. but again depends on size of riffle your
looking but some of the other guys on here will be able to help
better

Hey welcome to the forum! Getting a rifle shouldn't be a problem
now! The mates farm would be the best bet as long as he hasn't
given permission to lots of people for the same cal. .22lr or
.177hmr is probably your best bet to go for.
If your mate has had a rifle passed on his ground that means it
has adequate backstops as well.
Basically get yourself an application pack and fill in your
details. Get the mate to sign the permission part of it for you
stating that you want to use the cal you are after. Then go to a
rfd and put a deposit on a rifle which he will give you the
serial number for and put that on your form!! The other option
is the rfd can do you a docket to say you want to purchase a
rifle which means you have no money to spend before you are
approved.
The last part is get 2 referees to sign forms for you sayin you
are at least semi sane!! Lol

It sounds to be alot more straight forward than I originally
thought! And thanks Stewartyg - your response was exactly what
I wanted.
Quick question - do the police still call round for a chat
before you get approved?
Now to start shopping round and deciding on a rifle! That's the
fun bit!

Yea they will call out and see if you have half a notion about
shooting but will be mainly based on safe shooting!!
It's a lot easier and believe it or not quicker than it used to
be!! If you need any help just shout. What part if the world are
you in?

That's great! I'll get round to sending the application in the
new year once I spot a decent rifle worth picking up. Im from
outside Ballymena myself, out in the sticks.
