judging distance at night

Anyone else have really bad problems judging the distance at
night time with the lamp?...... i do lol was out last night and
decided to give the fox call a blast 2 mins late i had 3 foxes
standing in the field!!!!!!!!!!!! however one came at me that
fast before i knew it he was 15 yards off me. so i gave a shout
to stop him but he just veered off to the right and bounced into
a hedge ffs. the other 2 retreated aswell ffs. anyway went to
the next farm and spotted a rabbit at what i thought was 60
yards. ( i have the rifle zeroed for 60) put the cross hairs on
him and squeezed , bullet struck the bank about 3 inches above
his head ffs. i'm finding it hard to judge the ranges at night.
but during the day i guess them..then step them out and am
always very close to what i guessed, give or take a yard or 2.
just wondering has anyone any tips?

Wander your permission during the day...
You'll get a feel for your usual places you want to shoot from,
then get points of reference that will help you range..
Or, get cardboard cut outs of your quarry animal, place them at
measured distances then look at them through the scope (if
you've a mil-dot scope or similar then you can measure how many
dots animals appear at different ranges)
Also, what type and colour of light are you using...? I find it
hardest to range with red light...
Other than that, get out and practice more

cheers for the reply.. im using a white light and the odd time a
red. i know the land quite well but always seem off on my
distances at night. i guess it will just be practice practice
practice for a while :)

Its very hard to judge at night. I usually alway over estimate
the distance causing me to put the bullet or pellet over its
head.

Jimbo I was having the same trouble as yourself, what I did was
got some reflectors off old bikes and set them out with the
range finder in the daylight, then went back at night with the
lamp to try and get used to the distance, improved my judgment
slightly :)
Try setting a reflector beside your caller them you will know
how close the fox is roughly, but try not to shoot the caller
lol ;D

michael i will give that a go..... however i will need to get
some double sided sticky tape to stick the reflector to the
caller as it is usually in my mouth pmsl :)

Lmao maybe not such a good idea putting reflectors on your mouth
call lol,,, I thought you were using a u caller or something
similar lol, calls on the iPhone work great for me ;)
But remember not to shot ur phone ;D ;D

the phone. no joy ffs. do u know of a site to get them?

Best option I found was to buy a fox call cd from eBay for £1.50
then transfare onto phone m8, there is cracker vixan calls on it
m8 ;)
