looking for first rifle
By: crazyfool Date: December 4, 2013, 11:01 am

Ok guys,
A bit of a broad topic but as im a noob to buying rifles was
looking for some advice. Know some important stuff about them
regarding 6months supervision and backdrop etc. But its
different brands, good deals etc that im looking into. From
what iv read im liking the cz's. (jimbos post actually
persuaded me into starting this thread)
Anyway, was looking online and seen this
HTML http://www.czrifles.co.uk/cz-package-deals/
was thinking of the .22 but whats the advantages/disadvantages
of 16" v 20". Iv seen the thumbholes in real life and like how
they feel. But £520 for my first rifle is gonna be a bit of a
stretch at the minute with funds.
Does anyone know of any good package deals or local dealers who
sell good quality 2nd hand rifles. Im cautious of second hand,
as because i dont know much of rifles i don't want to buy a sub
par gun. Other advice is welcome also, i dunno, until i get
used to the .22 could i just be shooting at closer range
therefore no immediate need for the scope etc or similar
thoughts. My ideal range would be £250 to £350. Would mostly
plan on shooting rabbit, grey crow. Not too concerned with
foxes at the minute but if a local farmer approached me id be
helpful.
Sorry for the long post. Just wanted to get you as much info as
possible to get a better answer

I would think you could get a 2nd hand rifle & scope around the
£300 mark. I would love a Browning T bolt but my CZ is so good,
I couldnt justify it! Its a .17hmr 452 with 16"varmint barrel.
In terms of barrrel length the 16" version is far more accurate
than me and its still quite compact with a mod fitted. Not a
huge fan of thumbhole stocks, mostly because Im a lefty and the
lad I shoot with is right handed and we often share gun and
lamp. But like women, when looking for a gun, the best bit is
the chase!!!

Im from the mid ulster area. Have a friend who has a .17hmr, he
says he always liked the cz's but at the minute im looking a .22
over a .17. unless someone can give a good reason to go with
one over the other.
Wuckfit, when going looking at second hand, what do i need to
look out for.

Hey crazyfool I have the 452 in .22lr if you would like to see
or fire it that's no problem! I got my complete setup from
Crawford's in Maghera for £290- the rifle is 2nd hand but scope
and all was new! The rifle wasn't that pretty when bought it but
cleaned it up and it's as straight as could be.
Just make sure there are no bad knocks to the barrel and look
down the barrel to make sure it's straight and clean then check
the bolt isn't damaged! There isn't much more to it! Crawford's
in Maghera or young guns is probably your best bet!

Hi Stewarty
Thats a nice offer. I might take you up on it when i get a free
slot. Actually went to crawfords a few months back and they had
nothing in stock, left contact details as they were going to
look for some but they never got back, went in a week later and
same again. Then life got in way and the money set aside got
spent :(
young guns are in Castledawson?? Never been there, its
somewhere between the aughrim road and glenshane if its where iv
been told about. Does he have much stock? Prices in line with
others etc.

Got mine from McCloys on a good price, I know people say they
are expensive but usually have something in stock or will get
something in for you, price tags are for a starting point, if
they are too expensive then walk out there will be others about.

I left my cz452 into beatties in ball carry. It has a scope and
all on it mate. it may be worth a look at. I have no idea how
much he will be asking for it though. but a fantastic wee rifle.
i just bought the 455 cz and what can i say a smashing rifle
with unbelievable accuracy . cz rifles are very very reliable
and to be honest i think i would pick a cz every time. the bolt
is very smooth on them the walnut stock is fantastic. everything
about them just works. I would say that i had a 24 inch barrel
before but changed down to the 20 inch. It makes it a lot easier
to handle. and get in and out of the boot with moderator on lol.
i looked at the 16inch barrel and did not like it at all as it
really looked like a toy. however the 16inch barrel is actually
more expensive due to them having to do more work with the
barrel (apparently) cf beatties are doing a brand new cz 455
(rifle only) for 350 thats with a three year gurantee. as for
the .22 vs the 17 hmr... it depends what and how far you are
shooting. best feature of the .22 is the ability to use
subsonics and a moderator and silence the rifle. if you go for
the cz455 .22lr then you can get a 17hmr barrel or a wmr barrel
to fit it aswell.

Field and Stream in the Moy had a few 2nd hand 452's in stock a
couple of months back, some with scopes and mods..........
dearest was around £350.
If you change your mind about buying new, McCloy's was doing a
new 452 with a 20" sporter barrel for £395, but that's rifle
only.
