Anyone on here or know anyone who shoots with weimaraners as
opposed to the usual spaniels? I'm thinking the hunting bred
dogs are like lookin for a needle in a haystack over here,maybe
wrong?

I have hunted over 3 of them and all 3 were hard in the mouth,
and very head strung, I had an Italian spinone and it was a
tube! If your looking a pointing type dog stick with the English
pointers or German pointers and you won't go wrong

Ok thanks for your replies, thought they could be used as a good
hpr dog. Maybe jack of all trades master of none scenario.

They are a great and lovely looking dog. As already said you
might be safer sticking with a good well bred German pointer.
Although if you don't have the right type of ground those type
of dogs they are wasted.

Neal what type of shooting is it you do??? I thought the spinone
was going to be a jack of all trades but it was useless. There
is a reason why most of the lads have springers or labs they
have worked for shooters for years... Stick to what is being
used round you I learned the hard way paid 800quid for the
spinone for it to be nothing more than a pet!!!! If it's the
pointing ability that you want get a German or an English and
you won't go wrong, I know of English pups if your interested I
have shot and flown hawks over both parents..

Hi goshawker mostly rough shooting woodcock/snipe and some
pigeon over the summer. Maybe try a bit of wild fowling next
season. I know myself a springer is the best option but I live
in the town and think they could be a bit of a handful. Just
loved the look of the Weim but I'm thinking a cocker might be
better suited to my needs cos of the kids and all want it to
double up as a pet.

I would also be keen on a lab but all my pals tell me they are
no good for flushing is this true?

labs are primary a retrieving breed but get one and bring it up
and show it enough beating work it will learn , theres labs out
there what will beat like a springer might not be able to get
into the tighter spots but theyll give it a go
