first woodcock of the season

this mornin I took the dogs out to my Dad's and hunted our own
ground for a woodcock, I'd been out two weeks ago and nothin
showed but today was better, bud put up the first woodcock about
20 yards from me but it went straight away keepin the tree it
was under between us so I didn't get a shot, I hunted on round
to the side of the island when he put up another I'd only a gap
of a foot between two branches to get a shot so I had to let it
out a fair bit but with the help a of a 28rm #6 and a 3/8 choke
my wee browning 20 bore took it down, when I got to when it was
I thought bud had it but he hadn't so I thought it was caught up
in a tree as there was a couple of feathers floatin down but we
hunted for a few minutes and still nothin until I looked 6-7
yards to the left and my we 16 week old springer Chip was comin
back with it in his mouth with it flappin and struggling I
couldn't believe it that this wee pup who was only there for a
run and who'd never even saw a dead bird before was bringin my
woodcock back I was over the moon, I hope it's signs of many
good days ahead with him and Bud workin together, that's my we
bit of moss behind me thanks to my Grandfather.

16 weeks old? No bother to the boy. Looks like you got a good

happy days youll have him trailing next month lol. but all
seriousness it nice to have a story to tell with birds shot. I
bet ya the pup will be sick listeing to it by the time he,s 10
lol. you should get a pic of him with it in his mouth now that
would be nice 4 the album ;)
