Cartridge prices

[tt][/tt] Over the last four or five years we have all seen the
prices rise uncomfortably for that staple diet of our smooth
bores! I'll bet you all have, as I have had to, listen to
heartbreaking stories as to how little profit there is in target
loads and, if you patronize certain RFDs you may have detected
the unmistakeable aroma of bovine faeces as you have been told
they really do it as a service to the great unwashed 'shooting'
public and, (Jim this one is for you), "when cartridges were £80
a thousand I made £3 profit on the deal, now they are £160 a
thousand I still make £3 on the deal"...yada, yada.
There was a deal of truth in the argument that our Northern
Ireland prices are lower than that of England, impressive when
you consider the shipping prices for that incredibly lucrative
stretch of water between ourselves and what is often referred to
as, 'the mainland' although if they aren't in the shops, we
can't buy them!
I have been watching very carefully how our domestic prices have
of late overtaken the prices generally charged in England (of
course there are exceptions) so come on RFD's give us a break,
we have supported you during some very lean times now there are
some signs that fat is beginning to return to the bones, you
will be rewarded, you will probably even sell more!

If middle men (the guys who buy the carts from the RFD's) can
make a profit of 80 pence per box of 25 cartridges, how much
profit do the RFD's make? Let's just say it's £1 (extremely
likely to be considerably more). That would mean that for every
1000 cartridges sold they would make £40. It may be a slow
earner, but I have absolutely no doubt that there is a healthy
profit in shotgun cartridges. Ever notice how nearly every
dealer over here has something negative to say about the other
dealers? They all bicker and backstab each other, yet none of
them are willing to part with juicy gossip such as 'do you know
how much such and such a dealer makes on his carts? He buys them
for nothing and rips his customers off'. They won't tell you
this because they are getting the cartridges off the same
fucker, yet they will spin a web of bull to try to convince you
that they are your friend. Dealers are useless over here. Only
in it for the money.

Are all dealers not in it for the money?
Does a car dealer sell cars at a little over cost to do the
public a favour?
Does insurance brokers not sticking the arm in everytime we
renew our vehicle insurance?
Think we need to accept that it is just the way of life

You miss the point. Why should we accept getting ripped off? Are
you be happy knowing you are paying over the odds for goods? Do
you accept that gun dealers over here behave as if they have a
divine right to your hard earned?

I've worked in the gun trade here in the past and I can tell you
that the only RFD that's makin money of shells is the one that's
wholesaling them to other dealers, the small rfd's that have to
buy small quantities make very very little and close to the
figures stated in the first post, rfd's have to spend a small
fortune to stock shells to suit almost everyone and they may sit
for a long time, the rfd's that bring cartridges in by the lorry
load make good money and they make again supplyin them on, I
know for a fact that some dealers won't allow other smaller
dealers to make anymore than £6 per 1000 profit there just isn't
that much money in them anymore, a dealer has to bring them
in,unload them, store them, count them, move them into his shop
by hand then if and when they're sold they again have to be
handballed out again with paper work and counts done before they
leave the shop.

I think there is a 'big three' who fairly well control the
retail price of their imports who insist that those who
wholesale buy from them charge a minimum retail price, I'll be
sure semiauto would name the same people as I. and I agree
entirely that the small RDF probably makes very little on a
thousand, my original comments were aimed at the big boys, at
least one of whom is a real gent and very well liked and
respected in the trade a fact that will keep me returning to his
shop. I also know the dealers get together in a hotel once a
year and discuss?? well who knows? but we can guess. I
personally want dealers to make money, they take risks and lets
face it we'd be shagged without them. I wish I could find an
answer, I don't shoot as much as I want because of the costs
involved, there will come a cut-off point though. I am not the
sort of person who could appear once every 4 or 5 weeks, do a
shoot, put the gear away till the next time; I'd rather stop
altogether. I hope that time is some way off.
