28 Years Later

---------------------------------------------------------
On this day in 1984 I was born. Today not a bit wiser I decided
to treat myself to an evening with the dog and gun for a
change....well the only change was I did take a different gun,
my benelli woodcock. Anyway i though i would try something a
little different, a lowland shoot. I hoped to encounter a duck
on some of the drains maybe a pheasant in the rushy fields,or
maybe a pigeon an though not quite hard enough weather for
lowland woodcock there might just be a chance in the moss.
It was now almost 3 o clock as I left the house and headed out.
The fog was terrible , visability maybe only 100m and the dark
was closing in. I hunted down the whole side of the moss (about
45mins) and was yet to see a bird of any kind. There was an
eerie feeling leaving the rough ground as i emerged into the
fields again.

I headed for the drains and It wasnt long before I had my first
shot. Flush after flush of teal, wigeon and mallard all from
very little water and in no time I had 5 mallard for 6 shots in
a now very heavy gamebag. Heres a photo of the type of place the
duck use during the day.

I took a more direct route than normal back home across ground
that i had never crossed before as it was almost dark I
stumbled across this gem, its waters muddied with duck activity.

I made my way back up through the heavy cover of the moss,
sweating with my heavy load heavy coat and glasses all fogged
and just about light enough to see my way when suddenly a
woodcock flushed from my feet, bang bang miss miss. I really
couldnt see at all. A few meters on, same again miss and then
another. I got my coat off hung it over my bag, cleaned my
glasses and made an attempt to see. The next flush didnt fool me
or the one after that, and made it back home in one piece.
A cracking evenings sport all within walking distance of my
front door and nice way to spend my 28th birthday. Now dinner
and a beer.
