       .17 hmr

well as much as i love my little .22 lr i am thinking of
changing to the ,17hmr ..... main reason being out of the 11
foxes ive seen when out lamping ive had to let 10 of them go on
because i couldn't get them any closer than 90 yards. i dont
want to go any bigger than a 17hmr due to my land and the ammo
prices. question is. with well placed headshots what would be
the maximum effective range to take a fox with a 17hmr. ?

If I was you I would keep the .22lr and get a bit more ground
and go for a .222,.223 or .22-250 for the fox the .17 is a great
rabbit round but it's not a fox round. It will kill a fox no
bother if you hit it in the rite place 100 yards +. I shot loads
off foxes with my .17 then I went for a .222 and wondered why I
ever used the .17 on a fox. I now load my own .222 round and
they only cost around 32pence each.

not sure what to do mate. took a fox with the .22 and it dropped
no bother with a head shot. im the type who is very concious of
where my round is going to end up lol i walk away from 90
percent of shots rather than take them because of a less than
perfect backstop so i honestly think by getting a .223 or
anything like that i would make myself more nervous. most of my
fields are abut 1oo to 120 yards long and i can normally get the
foxes to within the same field but the ,22lr just lacks he
power, hard to know what to go for :)

I would still keep the .22lr as well jimbo. They are cheep and
easy to use but the best has to be the sound. The trigger is the
only noise you hear of mine when using the mod and subs!!

what mod and subs do you use again mate? mine still has a crack
off it fs. but there is very very little rabbits around here. to
het rabbits ive to travel a 180 mile round trip and its not
worth it . i was thinking the .17hmr would do both foxes and
       rabbits ?

I have a SAK mod and shoot Winchester Subs all the time...
The loudest noise is the report from the round hitting the
       rabbit...

I also use the SAK on my .22lr with RWS subs and it is ultra
quiet - get the HMR but hold on to the .22lr also.

Jimbo I know exactly where UR coming from mate. I shoot a .17hmr
and last season took a total of 46 foxes between 2 of us with
it. I would love a bigger rifle too maybe a .223 or .222 but I
just don't have the ground and am always afraid of where my
round is goin to end up. A .17 hmr will do very nicely for the
foxes mate and if you get them within 80 or 90 yrds and take UR
time with a good shot you will down the most of them.
Tom at Lavin guns will do you a great deal on one and a box of
50 rounds is only £10 with him...
It makes for a great bunny gun too and not that expensive for
       rounds...

cheers lamper. im really struggling with the we .22lr on the
foxes. thats all there really is round me. although ive seen
these hyper velocity .22 lr rounds. at 1700 fps . wondering
would they do the trick rather than changing rifles and going
through the variation process again. do you find the .17hmr to
       be very loud??
