Fishing again

Havn't done any shooting this year yet so I dont have much to
add on that side of things but I will add a little more to the
fishing section instead. Roll on November till the real sport
begins!!!
Rain arrived as they said it would on sunday morning and after
waithing all day for the water to rise eventually at around 3pm
I saw on the internet that the river I intended to fish (the
Owenkillew Co Tyrone) was on the rise. I drove the 45 miles to
find the river in heavy spate with huge amounts of debris and
leaves. I fished with worms untill dark without a bite. I
allowed the river would have cleaned off well by morning and
decided to return.
A bit dirty for the fly!

Up early monday morning, rang in sick to work and headed off.
Arrived at Killymore bridge before 9 to find the river rising
again and almost as dirty as the night before. Headed down
anyway hoping for it to clear but by lunchtime it was looking no
better. At this point I headed upriver to fish a tributary river
called the Glenelly. It was in much better condition and ideal
for the fly. I fished it to almost 4 o clock without so much as
a pull. I headed back to the car tired and depleted.
After drinking a cuppa I felt better and made the decision to
try one last bit. Just a couple of pools about a mile upstream.
What a difference a mile makes!
I hooked 2 fish in the first pool, about 30m long, landing
neither. Into the next wee pool about the same size and bang
straight in again this time landing a clean grilse of about 5lb.
About two more casts another fish about the same weight but well
coloured so I put this one back.

Still in the same pool I started again and within minutes I
hooked and lost another fish which was on for just a few
seconds. As I made the last cast before the tail of the pool all
went tight again, this time landing another clean fish about the
6lb mark which I kept.
I then went back to the start of the pools and came down again
landing this lovely fish probably close to 7lb. This one was
safely returned also.

That was 7 fish hooked and 4 landed in less than an hour and a
half. What a way to end a tough day. This is the two I kept.

Great days fishing woodcock1 - I am a member of Omagh Anglers
and fish the Strule and Glenelly, lovely water. It's been a
poor year overall, so good to see someone having a good day.

great days sport wc well worth the perseverance, enjoyed the
write up and your pics, you got a few nice fish there. I was
lookin at the join in your line in front of your reel - whats
that about ?

Awww man great fishing mate, yesterday I applied for the local
river for next year :). Didn't apply this year as I went for
FAC. Reading the wrote up and looking at the pics makes me what
to go out now.

lookin at the join in your line in front of your reel - whats
that about ?
He is using a multi-tip line [spey or shooting head] that allows
one to use various tips [usually 10-15'] in different densities
from floating to fast sinking. Looking at the colour woodcock I
would guess it is an Airflo system you are using?

Thats correct beanieboy, is is the ariflo delta spey system with
a 15ft intermediate tip. Thought fishing the glenelly with the
13ft rod and the 15ft tip you dont need much of the shooting
head out!
